I own one bass because it was free, and I can't afford more. My father in-law lets me admire his '64 Hoffner though.
I have three. I have a Peavey Grind that's really nice and growly, a Cort Curbow that has really good electronics, and a Douglas fretless J-copy.
They all have 6 strings. Versatility, growl, and mwah.

I have 30 or so whole basses it depends on what counts as a bass ! Do the projects on the bench count ? The body waiting for a neck etc. ? My main bass is a '69 Thunderbird that I have been playing since '77.
Down to 3 as of the other evening. Just sold my SX fretless 5 jazz because she hasn't seen hardly any play-time in the past year. Nice bass, but I needed the money to help pay off my 7 string.

I've got eight, mainly because I can't decide between several different sounds:
3 Precision-esque basses (a vintage P-bass, a MIM workhorse, and an SX copy that was my former backup and will probably go to my niece or nephew at some point)
2 Gibsons--my LP Money Bass is strongly threatening to become my new #1. I don't really play my Ripper much anymore but I so far I haven't been able to bring myself to sell it.
A Rickenbacker 4001---and now for something completely different.
A Schecter Stiletto Elite 4---"new school", and a joy to play. Active EQ.
An Acoustic Black Widow---made by Mosrite; an oddball but cool in a quirky old way. More of a collector's item than a player, although it plays pretty well and has a great thumpy tone.

I have 3 Alembics: Series I (long scale), SC (short scale), and a Spoiler (medium scale). I have 3 Music Mans: 1 pre-EB Stingray (plays like BUTTER), 1 EB Stingray (not so much) and a Cutlass I (very few of these were made). I have 3 Fenders: MIM Jazz (great bang for the buck), a '69 Mustang, and a OLD Tele bass that I totally F%&*ed up. I also have a Schecter fretless. All of these instruments are unique in their own way... I would not part with any of them. If I HAD to choose just 2 of them, I guess I would take the Pre-EB Stingray and the Alembic SC.

Wow! Out of curiosity, do you have a separate house to keep them in?
And I think you own 17. It looks like your cat owns the Warwick.
I'm down to 4, which is still too many:
- gibson tobias 6 string (fretless)
- rickenbacker 4003 (fretted)
- g&l L2000 (fretless)
- g&l L2500 (fretless)
The tobias I finally ruined as far as resale trying to repair the inlayed lines coming up out of the fingerboard. It's in playable condition but I've never been able to get used to it (originally bought it to learn 6 string). It sits in a corner of my room.
The rick I don't play anymore. If it were the fretless model, however, I'd definitely play it. Keeping it as an investment for now.
The g&l's are my main basses and the only two I play. The L2000 has the jazz style unlined fretless neck on it and gives a really velvety Jaco/Jeff Berlin type tone. The L2500 is a lined fretless and has a little smoother, more sustainy tone.
the only GAS's I have left are a rick 4003FL and an unlined fretless version of my L2500.
So I predict staying at 4 basses, but replacing the 4003 fretted and tobias I have now with the other GAS basses mentioned....

I'm new round this parts but I failed (miserably!) to find an introduction thread so I've decided to start here
I've got 3 at the moment but may be down to 2 within days to come.
1. Kolasinski Bass V - a fairly decent Polish fretted fiver with nice flame maple top and EMGs; I got it (+ cash) for my Nexus Shining 5 (also Polish) which I loved but I needed money. I may part with it soon (I got another trade offer).
2. Malinek Fretless 5 - another example of fine Polish luthiery; bought it 2nd hand for a very very good price 3.5 yrs ago; I guess it's a keeper unless I can afford something much better which may prove problematic as it souds incredible for the price I paid and I always get very positive comments on its sound both live and in a studio.
3. '79-ish Aria ProII Rev-Sound Bass (probably an RSB 800) - this one has a story I like it a lot and even managed to record an entire album with it (and 3 songs on another)
but as I'm really broke and in debt atm I'm forced to sell it (a 4-string isn't a must for me while 2 5s - a fretted and a fretless - are).

- Cheap bass; which was my first, (brand: Maison) defretted and "frankeinsteined" by me, that i finally don't use anymore; being a "fretted" guy for the moment.
