I research as thoroughly as I can, and for the few online axe purchases I've made, the piece I received is what I expected, so I've yet to return any; and again, I have bought online three times in three years. I've been around a long time, can read a spec sheet, and usually have a pretty good idea what's coming to me
I NEVER buy from an individual I don't know. I rarely buy from some 'Bud's Bass Sales' that is only a guy with an EBay or Reverb account, only real brick and mortar stores: They have solid return and billing policies and a rep to maintain. I feel this saves me a lot of possible aggravation, and so far, it's worked well. A business that has all of its' skin in the game usually has to do the right thing.
I'm all in with Tony P: I'm no fan of yo-yo-ing instruments for some small dislike that has nothing to do with whether it was a solid, honest transaction or not. These costs will be factored back into prices down the line, and for me personally, I just couldn't do it.
