Speaking as a musician, my answer to the op is as many as you and can afford without hurting yourself financially. Speaking as a realist who is also planning for my future (I don't plan working a full time job forever), between 2 and 4. Put the money that you would have spent on additional basses into a 401k or other retirement account.

I too would say as many as you wish. I myself however have two, one main and one backup just in case and it's working out great for me. Some of the bigger acts I have seen the bass players usually carry anywhere from 4-5 basses with them. It all depends on personal preference and also how bad your case of GAS is

Have you ever heard of Murphy's Law, thats usually what happens when you least expect it. At the very least you take 2 with you or else guess what the day you take 1 will be the day Murphy's Law strikes.

You are trying to understand the rule about owning basses so you are socially acceptable. Fair enough.

Rule: You can NEVER own too many basses!

Ignore all the clowns here who say you only need one bass and not even a backup bass (means your bass will break a wire and die beyond rapid repair when your band is opening for a major act and the audience and backstage is filled with major producers and music executives. And of course, no backup bass will be readily available). Your talent/experience level has nothing to do with this. Owning various basses is HOW YOU GET EXPERIENCE and knowledge of them! And if anyone questions it, just call yourself a "guitar collector" rather than a bass player. OK?
