How many basses is it acceptable to have....

well - lots on here will tell you to get as many as you can.
me, i'm finding that perhaps there's wisdom in frugality and contentment with having just what you need. that perhaps needing more and more and more is not a good state of being.
it's not good spiritually to always NEED and WANT more and the latest greatest and then to give in to this lust for more.... It's a never ending hunger and beast, this hunger for more stuff and it never truly satisfies. but it can disfigure us on the inside.

Why do bassists care so much about what's acceptable. They're for YOU, not them. Doesn't matter what or how many you own. Since when was everyone so sensitive?

I find that it is a tool, like anything else. No one questions an auto mechanic about how many wrenches he has...so why question the amount of tools you should have? My instruments are like paintbrushes to an artist, each one designed to give me a different effect when I use it. They are for me to create with. I may feel like having a different sound for whatever I do. One day I may need a fretless tone, another day I'm feeling a super fat and compressed soapbar with flats, then I may need a tone that cuts and still goes low...5-string J bass time!
I do fine with the eleven that I have, but looking to add about 4 more to the stable.
(I need a six string...preferably 34" scale)

True story:
A guitar player I played with for years was always broke. If there was a guitar for sale and he could scrounge up the money, he would spend every cent he had. He bought crap guitars, sweet guitars and everything in between. He had 80 guitars at one point. The filled our band room, his parents garage and his apartment. Eventually he had to start selling some off. But he had no control over the GAS pains. He was spending all of his time buying and selling guitars (this was pre Internet 1980's).
Now he makes boatloads of money buying and selling old rare guitars.
So, if you are good at it, no limits.

But yes, this is exactly what I'm referring to. Now I'm not being insecure or unconfident (is that a word?) here, but purely being honest... I am not a talented bassist nor am I the most dedicated to practice... but I do love the instrument and love playing out with my band.
But with my lack of skill, I feel that having two Warwicks is more than I can justify, let alone getting another bass!
I only have one right now, but I wouldn't mind having another. I have a Shecter Riot-5, and I have my eye on a Precision Special. I'm not into fretless, but if I was I'd want one of those too.
Most of us work hard to get through life as best we can, there is nothing wrong with indulging ones self with a myriad of basses, there are much worse addictions like drink, drugs and gambling, all the talk of what is good or bad spiritually is and will remain nonsense to me 
so go buy all those basses and think of the people you are keeping employed -- in the far east
