How many basses is it acceptable to have....

There is a guy here in town who has more high-end basses than I would bet Bass Central, Bass NW and the Low End combined.
HIGH END basses. (10 Sadowsky's, 4 or 5 Sadowsy's, Multiple Ken Smith's, F-Basses, MTD's...hell, can't remember them all).

and he's a total noob. Well, not much anymore, he has been playing a while, but he really can't play much at all.

So, it's all about what you can afford.

You need one. Seriously, Look at guys who may have owned or do own many, but are associated with one. Marcus Miller comes to mind, as does Jaco, Geddy Lee, Roger Waters. Gotta have the go to bass, and keep it. No I haven't got one yet, Longest in my possession has been 7 years.

I would prefer at least two just in case of needing a backup, but I would LIKE several. Five string Soap bar pickups, five string jazz type, four string older Fender P-bass (pre-1980's at least), fretless jazz maybe a five, acoustic bass like Washburn AB45, double bass. After that six, any others would probably be collectables.

The only justification u need! :smug:

Skill level has absolutely nothing to do with the number of instruments or price of instruments, unless you are using those factors to compensate being a bad player.

Heres a secret....I own expensive basses and I'M NOT THAT GOOD EITHER!!!!

Not true. Pastorious, and MM both are associated with other instruments than the ones that folks are more familiar with seeing them with. Jaco was known for his relationship with Guild and Carl Thompson, and sported his 1960 fretted Jazz almost as much as his 1962 "Bass of Doom".

Marcus is well known and appreciated for his fretless work on his solo projects (which is almost 1/4 of his work), and clearly isn't performing it on the signature Fender of his.

I have a friend that hits about 4 days a week, with rehearsals he plays 7 days a week. He only owns one bass and is satisfied. Yet he calls me to borrow one (or two) of the eleven when he needs work done on his one. It works for him. I look at my herd, and while happy, I still want a few more. I may gig once a year. That works for me!
