How many basses is it acceptable to have....

I have one. It would be good to have an extra just in case. But who's bass breaks down at a show anyway?
OP are you asking for permission? Own as many as you can comfortably afford if you want a collection.
My heart desires hundreds! But I can't afford many (financially or space-wise)
I currently have two Warwicks (Corvette $$ and Fortress One) and have my sights on a Squier P.

I'm getting Zen-like. A nice five string fretless and something that covers P-Bass territory are all I need. You have to decide what you need. The fretless usually does more acoustic type gigs and the P-Bass covers more electric type gigs.

Wellllll.... The $$ is in standard tuning, so covers most of my bases (or should that be basses? 
) and the Fortress One is in B standard, mainly due to my desire to start a metal band at some point soon. May or may not happen, who knows. I don't really get on with 5 strings.

Making my collection a collection is my way around feelings of inadequacy and having too much gear.
As in, oh, I have 8 basses....but only play 3-4 of them live.......the rest are collectible basses....rare or vintage. Worth keeping but not worth lugging around to gigs.
Then I don't feel like I have to sell them or play them too often.
