How many basses is too many????

I learned awhile ago that it's not about the number, it's about how many you play. If they're stacked untouched in a corner or in a closet it's time to let someone else enjoy them.

This… plus maybe one that has some sentimental value.

I finally CL’ed two basses, a cab and a guitar, and all went to young kids that were happy to get them and put them to use.

I enjoy that thought more than having them sitting in a bag in a rack in a back room.

i have 2 right now, a fender american jazz with the s1 switch and a warwick corvette standard 5, and i have a bongo 6 in tangerine pearl on the way, ill have it in october... im already looking at more basses when i just put the first payment down on this one

Hmmmmm just when you think you hit the mark, something new sparks some gas.
I have a Mia fender jazz, 57 fender avri, musician sub, Nash 57p, and a Charvel fusion 4. I thought that would cover most anything and now I see the new blacktop p bass with dual humbuckers. A fender body with musician power. Oh yeah feeling the gas.

G.A.S is like alcoholism; when your relatives start to complain 'bout it, you know it's gettin' off

Hi! My name is Bassbenj and I'm a GASaholic!

My story is that today I just sent off the check to a fellow TBer for my SECOND Wishbass! Hey, I can justify ONE Wishbass. Come on, did you ever hear a Fender Jazz give that "constipated cow" sound? I rest my case.

But TWO of them? I'm beginning to suspect that one of these days I'll wake up in a dumpster with new tattoos and a tongue bolt, no idea where I am or what I did, but still tightly clutching a Wishbass! That's when I'll know I need rehab!

Which one did you get?

"Wishbass, bet you can't own just one...™"

Right now, I have 9 basses. If I had to, I could cut that number down to 5 or 6 instruments that I use on a pretty regular basis. But when you start using particular instruments for certain tones or techniques, things can get to the point where it might seem like you're stockpiling instruments. It's a totally subjective kind of question and the answer is going to vary with pretty much anyone who responds.

Honestly, you only need one bass.
Two is a luxury.
More than that is too many.

I have 9. Whoops.

I started with one.
Then the fretless.
Then the short-scale hollow body (I needed a lighter one...).
Then the 5-strings.
Then the J (a Squier).
Then the P (another Squier, and the finish was so wonderfully vintage...).
Then the active J (used).
Then...
...then my woman told me to STOP. :atoz:

"but I'll keep on trying, 'till I reach the higher" number of basses...

ps: UB, EUB, some guitar, etc, they're not part of the list, isn't it? :D

I don't personally care to own more than 2 or 3. I have owned many more at different periods, but it came to seem like a chore keeping them maintained and stored properly and kept in playing rotation. One main bass and a backup is good for me.

There's no right or wrong answer to a question like this. some people can afford and want to own 135 basses. Good for them! That's their right and their business. It ain't for me, but that doesn't make them wrong.
