i own a lot of pedals. more than I can count. off the top of my head-
korg g5 synth, DOD fx65 chorus, DOD FX62 chorus, 105q wah pedal, DOD green envelope filter, boss limiter, DOD FX91 drive, ebs multidrive, tech 21 vt bass, boss LS-2, probably more stuff that i'm forgetting.
in the past i've owned... so much i'm tempted to say nearly everything.
i do approach pedals as an enthusiast/collector, but also value them as a professional musician. I do like the idea of having many choices of things i can season my sound to taste with.
good example - in this video i'm using this signal chain-
bass - LS2 - one chain with VT bass, boss limiter. other chain clean (so a clean blend) - into DOD FX62 (guitar) chorus, then recorded in stereo with reverb added in post. the drive/limiter are turned on half way through, so scroll to the end.
several effects used on subtle settings to achieve a little enhancement is great. obviously I also like to use wah pedals into high gain drives and stuff, but for the most part i've come to appreciate less is more lately.

Depends on the setlist.
Slight compression with some tone coloring and preamp with some vintage tubey tone coloring and EQ are always on.
Then...
Delay if we're playing 'Bridge of Sighs.'
Synth if we're playing 'Works hard for the money' or 'Sweet Dreams are made of this.'
Maybe chorus if we're doing a song where I get a solo (rare).
Heavy Distortion if we're playing 'Man in the Box.'
Light distortion if we're doing any Black Sabbath.
I've got a big bin of effects, most of which are used on 1 or 2 songs with signature sounds.

If I am playing out, I usually use Comp always on, a little light overdrive (always on), and a preamp I use as an EQ that I leverage for some songs to emphasize what I am playing.
At practice I have comp, sustain, fuzz, overdrive, envelope, and preamp DI (we play headphones for practice). I'll mix and match for songs to try and dial in a tone that works for a particular song.
In the studio, it can be anything the song needs.

Sometimes chorus and flanger for some Chris Squire stuff. I'll also use some reverb and compression...
My most used pedals are a bass drum sampler and a looper. And an envelope filter. And a whammy. maybe a delay and a chorus and some over drive make its way in there too.

I'm pretty straight forward and have been using the same pedals for years. Line6 DL4 delay (I call it the green machine). An Aguilar Tone Hammer- I EQ my amp for my finger tone and when I got to slap style, I engage the Tone Hammer which is EQ'd for slap.

Gotta have my always-on overdrive no matter what kind of music I'm playing, even jazz. For rock I use distortion, and stacked distortions for harder rock/metal. Despite my TB handle, I don't use fuzz.
Occasionally I will use compression, but it's nice-to-have, not must-have. Usually depends on whether I want to set up an extra pedal. Because I change pedals from gig to gig I haven't bothered with a board (yet).
The one exception: I have a Zoom B1on multi-effect that I occasionally play around with just for fun at home, but I've never gigged it.
Note: my effects mostly come from pedals. The only exception is my Darkglass amp head that has built-in distortion and compression. I got that because I occasionally play gigs where I don't have time or space to set up pedals.
I play in a couple different projects and wanted it be board to rule them all, so for some projects I use very little, and for others, I use a lot.

Used Seldom: Pitchfork, Phaser, Weird-Ass filters from the Zoom (Even though I say seldom, I use them often in one of my side projects with some friends.)
Always on: Q-Strip, either DI or to an amp, and The Milkbox Compressor.
Used the most: Chorus, Delay, OD
Used Often: Flanger

I have 5 on my board: Compressor (always on), Octave (used on a couple of "practice" songs), Envelope Filter (1-2 songs), Chorus (1-2 songs), and Overdrive (1-2 songs). Haven't gigged this set up yet, but I think it should work well.
I play in church. Straight to FOH, no amp, IEM. Basses are P or 'Ray.
I use a mute pedal (i.e. tuner) 100% of the time. I run a compressor much of the time as well - it just sounds better in the IEM mix. With the passive fretless I run an EQ to bring out more of the upper mids. Oh, and with the fretless I have compressor set to be always on so I can do quick visual checks on intonation while playing. Yes, it helps a little.
I just added an amp emulation pedal which gives a bit of compression and EQ and really has improved the sound in my IEM. Still working with FOH to get the settings right. It has enough natural compression that it may make the compressor redundant.
So my list remains short:
