How many effects do you use(if any)?

I just use a Tonebone Bass one DI and Shure DLX16 wireless

A little compression from my bass head is in use pretty much all the time. I'll also kick in an octave pedal (EBS Octabass) or some overdrive from my Radial Bassbone OD pedal when the song calls for it.

Aside from the two mentioned above, the only other pedal I have on the board at the moment is a tuner.

I think I have somewhere between 20-25 pedals in my full rig, and if I bring the full rig it's because I need them all and will use them all. Mostly looping delays -- I have multiple units, and a lot of my sonic palette is based on passing loops back and forth between those units while inserting various modifications -- and synth pedals, plus the usual fuzz/distortion, envelope filter, chorus, phasor, delay, blah blah blah...

I was just curious how many effects some of you use and what they are or if you don't use any at all?

And if you do use effects, are they pedals? Put on afterwards in a DAW? or maybe just built in gain or reverb on your amp?

I have a cheep multi-effects pedal (Zoom B1 Four) that allows up to 5 effects and I always end up maxing it out when I get playing with it.

Compressor is on all the time. Otherwise usually no effects are on. IMO the only effect a bass needs is compression. But the band thing im in now I get to use more effects than usual.... probably because I have the pedals to begin with so why not?

For example...

Believer (Ozzy) - a little od on the intro & Chorus, reverb, eq on that interlude in the middle. Boss MS3.

Bark at the moon (Ozzy) some orchestral hits on the intro via the C4, some key sounds with an SY1

Yankee Rose (DLR) sustaining the keys and playing bass on top during the chorus, and then more keys (sustained as well) with some delay/chorus during that mellow middle part of the song. SY1/Boss MS3. Some foot dancing on that song...

So you know, some songs call for it because it's part of the song, and some other parts you can cover when it's done by a dedicated keyboardist to some extent, and then in other cases it's just fun to add as long as it's tasteful.

Once upon a time, not very long ago, I always had at minimum a compressor, a BBE sonic stomp, and a clean boost. Sometimes also an octaver, a chorus, and a fuzz. Then one time last Fall, playing an outdoor gig and nervous about COVID, I didn't bring any of them. At the end of the first set, our sound guy came up to me and said "Sounds great! What did you do?" I went home and sold all of them.

I pretty much use an always on compressor and transparent overdrive, and kick on a SA C4 occasionally for octave or filter effects.

Covering a tune that uses octave, flange, fuzz, filter delay and reverb cannot be done with just my strings and fingers so I have the pedals should the need arise.

Yes, one or two of those might be able to be copped with technique but not all simultaneously.

If playing most of my repetoire- bass into amp would suffice 80% of the time.

Once I bought a worthy bass, I agree.

Although I still have a dirt and reverb sitting I'm a draw.

I usually have no more than 4 or 5 on my board and they vary by project. Usually 2-3 OD/Dirt pedals, some kind of preamp like an Ampeg SCR-DI then possibly a multi-modulation pedal like a Nux Mod-Core that has options for chorus, phaser, flanger options. Occasionally a Synth-Wah. All my pedals are cheap and/or used.

Or none. Last night was a first rehearsal with an acoustic thing that was a PJ5 with flats straight into a 1x8. That's how I would prefer all my projects to be: simple.

I go back and forth between lots of effects and just a few utility. Seems like I only play with the effects and I make music with the utility tools.

Thats just for one band, in the other one (more like a blues, classic rock style) i just use the comp or nothing, lol.
