How many effects do you use(if any)?

Oops. I go bass->tuner->octaver->chorus->amp. I don’t run anything through the FX loop, but that would probably be the “correct” spot to put the chorus.
For bass: Tuner>Compression>Octave>Chorus>Preamp/Di. All pedals between my bass and the front input of my amp. Compression on the amp is defeated.
For guitar: OD pedal>tube amp with built-in Reverb and Chorus. Clip-on tuner.

Compressor (with side chain HPF) and LPF are always on. I occasionally use a flanger. Occasionally use The Drop.
My rack mounted preamp has built in optical compressor. My WTDI also has compression as well. Other than being fairly specific on my EQ settings, that’s it.
My small board gets all the gig use. 2 compressors, always on. TC Electronics and a Smoothie. Also always have a Broughton high pass filter always on. There is a TC Electronics tuner there. For effects a MXR phasers and a TC Electronics chorus. Last a TC Electronics HOF reverb, almost always on at a low level.

Do I use effects? No, not so's you'd notice...
Why? That's just how I learned to play, and I've never felt any real need to change. I started out on a friend's '68 Rickenbacker 4001- in '68. Impressive as his big Vox rig was, he had no external effects, so... When I was in a band, I played the other bass player's rig ('70 Japanese P-Bass copy/cheap combo amp). He didn't have any pedals, either, but back in the early '70s, we didn't really need effects, anyway; so... The guy I bought my first bass from had his own band, and played a P-Bass thru a Marshall Bass 12 combo amp. He had no effects, either - and TBH, didn't seem to suffer from the lack. So, I bought that '78 Fender P-Bass; a Marshall Bass 12 amp of my own, and carried on... At present, I also have a Fender Rumble 500 that's well endowed in the effects department. I've fooled around with everything it has to offer, of course, but other than setting the gain for a particular bass, and setting the tone controls to suit the room, I play it clean. A few years ago, I broke down and got an effects pedal - an MXR M83 chorus/flanger. I have to admit that it works pretty well. My guitar playing friend - who pestered me for years to get effects pedals - hasn't bothered me about it since. I did use it - once, to make sure it worked. Didn't make what I like to play sound any better, so it's currently in it's box... I had to go down to the basement and dig it out, to see exactly what it is. But, it keeps my friend happy - and quiet; so...
I have nothing against effects per se. I understand completely that lots of music needs that kind of stuff, and that's perfectly fine. But, I just don't play the kind of music that needs or benefits from effects, and at this stage of my life? I doubt I ever will. So, except to keep my guitar playing friend quiet? Not for me...

been playing since 1994 with no effects. every so often i buy something, try it a few times and either put it away or sell it. sometimes i put it away for a decade or longer, then sell it.
i've played in metal and punk bands, and my clean, bassy, attack heavy sound is good with distorted guitars. and it's good with every kind of music i've played. if it wasn't, i'd use effects

I use 5 for metal bands. Distortion, EQ, Compressor, BBE and a Noisegate. Always on. Straight to amp for other styles.
I have a modular system of two distinct mini-boards.
My "dry board" has a Cali76 CB compressor, a DarkGlass Vintage Deluxe and a PolyTune 3 mini (with buffer). DarkGlass can act as an overdrive or basic EQ; depending on the gig. That board fits my gig bag and I use it on regular gigs.
My "wet board" has an OC-2 and a chain of Aguilar effects. I use that one in addition to my "dry board" on effect-heavy applications; such as power trio gigs or experimental studio work.
I'm really enjoying the modular approach because I don't carry unnecessary pedals to places where I don't need them.
