How many effects do you use(if any)?

I use to be that guy that owned 20+ pedals on a board and now I only use 1.

Compressor.

That’s all a bassist ever needs IME.

I used to use a lot of effects, especially in more experimental projects.

But 3 years ago I trimmed down to 8 on a Metro 22 pedalboard. There has been some minor variation, but pretty tight now:

CAL Grizzly Bass OD
SUF Civil War fuzz
MXR Bass Env Filter
Iron Ether Polytope chorus
MXR Phase 90 script
Iron Ether Xerograph Deluxe env filter
MXR Micro Amp

Usually just 1 or 2 at a time, for some projects I might supplement with an analog Octave down or some delay and reverb, but only if it’s agreed we’ll try and get sonic and experimental.

I don't use or own "effects". I'm not a studio bassist. I arrive at the gig, take maybe a full 5 seconds to adjust /EQ my sound, depending on my mood, and play. No one has ever complained about my sound. And I save a lot of money NOT buying pedals and effects that I don't need.

I'm not suggesting anyone NEEDS effects but they can be useful and certainly fun and allow for an added layer of creativity

I have an always on Compressor (OvniFX Smoothie) and an always on HPF (either Fdeck HPF-3 or Broughton) and I have another spot that rotates - Right now is a no-name bass eq for when I use my EUB. But sometimes is a MOOG chorus or a delay.

Let's see - tuner, boost (on all the time - helps optimize the gain structure of my rig), an eq, a lowpass filter. and sometimes an overdrive or chorus. Then a DI.

So, usually 0 "effects", sometimes 1, but more than that in terms of pedals.

I don’t count a tuner and the compressor and preamps are always on, processing but not an effect in my opinion.

Beyond that I might use dirt or dirt plus octave for an accent and I might use chorus or other modulation. Most I’d ever combine is fuzz+octave+chorus or flanger. But most of the time I’m pretty clean.

1 but it's a preamp and I don't really consider it an effect. More like an amp in a box. But for now I combined my guitar and bass board so it looks like I have 10.

Most of the stuff on my board is not what you'd really call " effects". Apart from an envelope filter, I have a compressor/limiter, a quasi parametric eq, tube pre-amp and a boost.

All of them, over a hundred. 2-18 at a time. Mostly I use tone shapers like preamps, filters, comps, harmonic enhancers, and also dirt, overdrive, distortion, fuzz, square wavers, and then plenty of envelope triggered stuff like filters, envelope phasers and flangers, also lots of modulation, phasers, tremolo, flangers, chorus and vibrato, and wah wahs, and I really love sub octave and pitch devices, also synths, all manner of synths, analog, digital, from PLL’s to Future Impact, and let’s not forget loopers, feedback loopers and sustaining granular loopers like a Freeze, and delays, especially modulated delays, and reverbs too. Bit crushers are cool, but I don’t use them much.

I have a cheep multi-effects pedal (Zoom B1 Four) that allows up to 5 effects and I always end up maxing it out when I get playing with it.

I guess my answer depends on how you define "effects". I have a rack mount Tech21 Ged 2112 overdrive, and a Keeley Compressor Plus.

I would define "effect" as any outboard device (or software) that augments the sound in a way not achievable through amplification or technique alone

I use a compressor all the time (Boss BC-1X). I use the Boss Super Chorus pretty regularly. To me, it sounds better than most other choruses that are specifically made for bass. I also occasionally use the Boss OC-3. I’m a Boss guy right now.

Today, there's ten odd — more if you dissect the MM4: always a cleanish boost and a compressor / sustainer to juice things up. Always the trusty pre. Then there's delay / echo / reverb. After that, the fun begins. Happy with just the tuneful two into the pre, when push comes to shove, but a touch of delay's always tempting. Around the corner, the song remains the same insane less tame.
