How many TBers does it take to change a lightbulb?

12 to whine that their spouses have prohibited them from purchasing any new lightbulbs until all the old ones have burnt out or been sold.

12 more to proclaim that THEIR spouses have been working overtime to purchase new, fancy light bulbs as gifts of love and devotion.

i'm a noob here when it comes to lightbulbs...

i'm into funk, ska, metal, folk, jazz, rock, punk, fusion, progressive, new age, worship, classical and chiggory (which is a style specific to our area down here in north southwestington)...

...anyway, my rig is a small brass table lamp (MIA) and a 60w bulb. is this rig good enough for outdoor reading?????? help, i'm reading outside in TOO DAYS!!!!!! :crying:

Laughing so hard...

I've been thinking about making the switch to screw-cap on one of my bulbs...I think I'll keep the others capped with bayonet-caps for now. I've heard that screw-caps give a light that is warmer but isn't quite as bright? Because I think that that's what I'm after. I'm aware that they're a bit stiffer to screw in, but I've heard that the GE's are not as stiff as most, and give a bit more mid-spectrum? Although some people are saying that they're too easy to screw in and they just can't get used to them. What do you think I should do?

Anybody using dimmers to extend the life of their bulbs?

It prevents the massive inrush current that usually what tears the filament up.. Most bulbs burn out when you turn them on. Ever wonder why? I have been using a dimmer for years on most of my bulbs and can get everything from a warm mellow "lets get it on" tone to a " Gestapo interrogation mode" all by adjusting the slider.

Also, I wash my bulbs and screw them back in. Gets me double the life.

Anybody know the difference between the soviet and chinese made versions?

The icandescent don't usually change spectrums with age, but the fluorescents really do. I try to choose a bulb with a 7000 Fmidpoint for fresh gigs and 11,000 F halogen / externally cooled for the salt water gigs. I change my fluorescents every three months like clockwork.

Moreover, everybody knows that changing lightbulbs is all in the fingers.

At Berklee they taught us how to change lightbulbs properly. Of course, the fundamentals are important...being able to read the bulb package (not just the wattage number), the proper technique, the acceptance of the fact that nobody's really been able to change a lightbulb quite like Miles could in the late 50's/early 60's...but it's how it feels when you change that bulb that ultimately gets you the gig.

Now I'm not saying you had to have studied formally to be a great bulb-screwer, or that reading is an absolute must, or you need to know your bulb theory inside and out...but it certainly can't hurt, cats. You dig?

I prefer the term "electric lamp changer" to "bulb-screwer". It differentiates the fact that a light bulb is more than just a light soruce with different wavelengths than the other types.

Are incandescent bulbs louder than fluorescent bulbs?

Also, at The Julliard School, we were taught its joules/second not watts when you are talking power CONSUMPTION but candelas that really matter. Also, there are no minor b6s even though the Berkely guy put in their guitar voicing book.

OK- You guys can go on about your flourescents, halogens, LEDs, etc,etc. IME, Thomas Edison got it right with the original incandescent bulb. There IS a reason they've been making them for so long - because they work! After all, it isn't the bulb that matters, any bulb will give light. It's what your eyes do with the light that matters.:smug:
