I've only had about thirteen. My first bass, a Quest p-bass, was sold off because I wasn't feeling the bass playing thing yet. The only other ones I've ever sold was a Steinberg headless bass that I thought looked cool, but I hated, and a 6 string Carvin that I never played.
That leaves me with ten, all of which are different types, eub, fretless, 5 or 4 string. Or for a specific purpose like different tunings.

23 in 35 years - We have 12 (2 are upright.) I share with my son (2) and daughter (1). My son is currently with us and he plays the 9 electric basses in the house and I am glad. I told them they can do anything with the 3 basses - sell if they have to. One is actually a hybrid Charlie Hunter type 7 string. I kept some basses with me when I was working in San Diego and I probably can go down to the one hybrid, 1 fretless, 1 6-string, 1 PJ and I'd like to keep 2 uprights, because when one goes down sometimes it's weeks till you get them back. I think that's reasonable. Honestly I do not desire getting another bass. I do not have space. I also do not want to sell any.
A dozen seems like a good number

This year or since I started playing?

Years ago I went through a real collecting phase and when I hit 100 I knew I had to stop. I sold most of them off and ended up with around 10. These days I'm up to 20ish basses, a few guitars, and some random stuff (my son has a few different instruments he's learning at the moment).

If I tried real hard I might be able to come up with a grand total from the age of 14 until now, but it's probably 150 or so.

Six. Two were donated to me, two were presents, two I bought myself.
-1970s Kay K2B (Gibson SG ripoff)
- 2000 Peavey Fury 4-string (the bass of my teenage years)
- 2006 Westfield AB858 acoustic bass guitar (bought for travelling, scottish acoustic bass guitar. Company has since folded, I might have one of the only ones in existence!)
- 2007 Lakland Skyline series Darryl Jones signature (bought with inheritance money, my main bass. One of the final Korean production run)
- ?????? No-name cheap P bass copy (given to me by someone who wondered if I could fix it. Never played.)
- 2018 Lakland Skyline series 55-02 fretless (bought by me, my #2 bass)

Oh boy...I actually had to think about this and write it down. I've been playing for 22 years, I've owned 21 basses, and I currently have 11 with no plans to reduce that number since I love them all.
