Actually it's a good question.

When I was 16: 1
When I was 17: 2
When I was 18: 3
When I was 19: 4 (that was a '77 Fender jazz)
When I was 28: 5 (Steinberger baseball bat copy, went soon away)
When I was 29: 6 (custom P)
When I was 30: 7 double bass

Now I'm 42. Am I cured of GAS forever? :-)

5 total (in 14-15 years of playing):

  • Stagg precision bass, converted to fretless (which is dissembled for at least 10 years)
  • Squier VM fretless jazz bass (sold)
  • Ibanez BTB 400 QM (sold)
  • Fender Roger Waters precision bass (acquired in 2010.)
  • Squier CV jazz bass (1st gen., acquired in 2016.)

4 basses in about 40 years.

The first one I bought, can't even remember the name, some used 60's Asian semi hollow job.
The other 3, I made myself, just finished the last one a couple of weeks ago.

There was a period of a little over 20 years where I only played and made guitars, I only have 3 from a dozen I made for myself in that time. Plus there have been a mandolin, a lap steel, a twelve string acoustic and a classical acoustic I bought along the way. I only have the classical guitar left out of that lot.

I'd like to think that the reason I only saw the need to build myself 3 basses over all those years is that by building my own, I got pretty much what I wanted at each period in time. Then again I might just be flattering myself. Still, I hadn't though about the difference between bass numbers and guitar numbers before now. What does it all mean? :confused:

Been playing since 1994. Just glad I haven’t averaged more than one per year lol. Only currently still have the last three on the list. It’s kind of in the right order timeline wise but Im sure I probably have one or two out of place.

A grand total of 9 for me. I remember each one - when I bought it, where I bought it, when I sold it...

I don't gig and/or earn a living playing. I play as a hobby, so I have no need for a large stable of basses - currently have 2 - fretted and fretless Fender Jazz.
