One of my responsibilities over the last 10 years that I worked was reviewing/correcting reports written by the agents I supervised. Some were excellent writers. Others? Not so much.

One of the requirements for the job (federal law enforcement) was a Bachelor's degree. I found it stunning and disturbing that some of the agents were absolutely terrible writers. I know that everybody has different areas in which they excel; but I would expect everybody to have a grasp on basic writing skills before earning a college degree.

The smartest, most intelligent person I know is a substandard writer. He has a degree in physics and has genius level knowledge in many areas, but he just lacks the ability to consistently construct written material without making errors in spelling, grammar, or composition.

...start some kind of writing club on TalkBass?
Thinking about this (but not too hard ), perhaps it should be called WriteBass. Do we talk to each other? No, we don't. We write to each other. ;)
...loath and loathe.
Don't forget loaf and its corollary, loafe ........... :smug:

I care.
Obviously, mistakes happen.
I get tired, or distracted...or have a couple of shots of whiskey or coffee more than I should.

However, as a native speaker of proper English, and not the bastardized mish-mash youse Americans have turned a once fine language into, I do feel some responsibility to show you louts the error of your ways, to lead by example, as it were.
Therefore, I do try to be precise and accurate in elucidating my thoughts.

:D

This is where it can get tricky and often I check my writing against the audience, rather than my own standards. I mean, we are both foreigners here, and correcting them is a bit like going into someone's house and fixing the way the toilet roll hangs.

So, in summary, ANY mistake I make here is intentional, and designed to help me fit in.

The internet is global, no ones a foreigner here

I have to say I am always a bit annoyed by the kings bloody english pronounciation of the word Aluminum, look it up and please speak it the proper way, 4 syllables....not 5, thanks

I used to wonder why my teachers used to seem so uptight about my spelling, grammar and punctuation. Once I started having to read other people's writing, I totally got it. (It hurts my brain, trying to read sloppy writing. If I had to grade 30 papers in an evening, I would get really cranky with that red pen.)
As an online seller, I have passed on giving deals to folks who message me like they're some elementary school kid texting their friend. (It doesn't have to be like a salutation to Buckingham Palace; just let me know you're halfway with it & legit and don't annoy me right out of the gate.)

Do you care? Not at all? A little bit? If English isn’t your first language or you have some sort of cognitive issue then that’s a different story. I’m asking native English speakers primarily, although I’m often impressed by people who speak English as a second or third language and do it well.

I can write well, spelling not so well. Between my best efforts, fighting with autocorrect, and trying to communicate on my Apple products, it usually comes out a garbled mess.

I had a minor in Journalism while majoring in English. I'm constantly editing what I write. Even on a community board. I'll use the edit button so often while it's available I've had people come along and quote me while I'm still tweaking.

The written word is communication. Do it poorly and chances are your thoughts won't be given the attention you would like.
