How much should I pay for a malfunctioning Alembic F1X?

I know someone selling an Alembic F-1X and apparently it makes a buzzing noise, when you take the case off apparently this stops...

The guy is checking to see if there are any issues with the signal but I'm expecting that there may be buzzing due to grounding issues or something like that...

It's in Australia and brand new they're about $1500AUD here

What would you all pay for that?

Everything can be fixed, it's just a matter of much it would cost to gut the board and replace parts etc

Agreed. If it has any value the guy can fix it himself. It's impossible to know what needs fixing sight unseen. As far as you know, it could be entirely fried.
Maybe $100 if you want to push your luck.

As has been said, $50 tops. If it's totally fried it may cost a few hundred to repair. Me personally, I'd stay far away from this one.

Wise advice, I'm trying not to let my GAS get the better of me... there are no second hand alembic preamps EVER where I live

Well, a couple of things to consider. Could you live without the $50 if the thing turns out to be a paperweight? Do you have a good tech you could go to? Perth is a big city, gotta be a few guys, at least. You'll have to be prepared for the tech to say it will cost $400 or whatever to fix...and either pay it or try to sell it for what you paid for it. The Alembic preamps do come up for sale here ocassionally. It's all about your comfort/risk zone. Good luck.

When I see "deals" like this, I always think that if it's so easy/cheap, why doesn't the seller get it done so he/she can pull the full bucks when he/she sells? Perhaps they know more than they're telling...

*nodding head* Absolutely. If it looks too go to be true...
The seller might be doing exactly what our TB buddy would wind up doing with it; trying to sell the paperweight for what he paid for it. There are no new or newer Alembic F1Xs. They're all "old" and 2nd or 3rd-hand at this point. I.E. many of them are pretty beat up already. And some are paperweights. Caveat Emptor!
