How NOT to wind strings

I was doing a search to find various Warwick Thumb pictures (interested in how the pickup placement and angles had changed between various models) and came across this YouTube video of someone showing off their bass ... at 20 seconds in, all I can say is just wow!

Trust me --- many people have taken enough pride and care to wind strings properly long before TB existed.

With that many windings, you're just waiting for the strings to slip under the tension...not stable or safe at all!

Having that much extra windings, you run the risk of having the strings move or slip. In other words, your tuners aren't necessarily the only thing governing your tuning.

and because it isn't even round - there is no consistency to how it tightens the string. It's like a variable shaped cam lobe. And besides, it's just embarrassingly ugly

I've seen one like that before. It was a prison bass brought to me for repair. The inmates are allowed no tools.

I imagine they probably aren't allowed to have the cut-off ends of steel core strings either.

It won't stay in tune. Any time you have more than one layer of string, or loose sections, on the tuning post it will shift and go out of tune at random.

I wouldn't expect those windings to provide consistent tension.

I'm trying to figure out what strings are that long to begin with, to get that many windings. And this is a long scale bass. Those strings also look like a light gauge.
