Thx, but not me. I’m just somebody who’s been playing awhile. And I’ll bet that at least half the members here at TB could do the same.
I sometimes think we bass players don’t give ourselves anywhere near the credit we should. It’s kinda like fretless. I was trying a fretless in GC one time and this guy says how he wished he could play fretless. I asked him if he was a bass player. He said he’d been playing for about five years. So I handed him the bass and said: look, you pretty much already know where the notes are - you can do this. And he did. Sure, his intonation needed work. But it was definitely well in the ballpark. And you could at easily recognize the riffs he was playing.
He and his GF (who was watching from the sidelines) were both amazed. I wasn’t. I’ve seen this before. People are perfectly capable of achieving their dream - but it’s like
they’re waiting for permission or something. So my take on this is don’t wait for somebody else to give you permission. Give yourself permission. Somebody hands you a piece of junk, just smile. Then proceed to lay down a groove with it that’ll bring the magic and the mojo.
We’re bass players. We
can do this.
We are
not afraid.
(Or so I think anyway.
