How much shifting does your collection go through. Is is growing or shrinking? Are you swapping stuff in and out?
Or do you have a stable stable of thoroughbreds?
Despite recently adding a fifth bass to my collection, I believe mine to be a stable stable. Wait, scratch that. I'm one step down from stable stable.

I had thought that my 24 Bass "Herd" was complete as of early this year. I finally had everything I wanted, and I've never been a "flipper", or someone who suffered from GAS. Decades ago, I made a list of basses that I wanted, and just worked on filling the list. I did sell 2 basses in the 30+ years it took me to complete the Herd, but those were replaced by by basses that filled their spots better. Being left handed, I often had to take basses that did fill a spot, but... not as well as I would have liked. So, when something better did come along? Those basses got replaced... Even so, I wound up with 4 basses that had no official spot in the Herd, but that I liked too much to part with. So, I thought my buying days were over. Turns out, not so much...
This summer, I was looking at the Goede guitars on the Birdsong website, when a guitar with a body wood I'd never seen, caught my eye. Spalted Texas Pecan. And, a new Bass model caught my eye, too; a dual pickup Fusion 2. I have a lined fretless, very custom Fusion; I love that thing to death. Before I knew it, I was talking to Scott Beckwith about building a Fusion 2 in Texas Pecan. Looked at the "under construction" page this morning; it's #135, and it's coming along nicely. It won't fill a spot in the Herd; the "Short scale Bolt Neck" spot is already filled - by a superb Warmoth Mini- Precision Bass. It will join the "outlier, too nice to sell" basses. That will make 28 basses... I try hard to play them all; it's an awful lot like work, sometimes...
Then, 2 weeks ago? I was in the local Guitar Center, and saw something I had not seen in the 5 years I've lived here; a real, live, actual left handed bass. It was a Chopper Blue Sterling Sub Ray, and due to a nasty ding in the front of the body? Marked down - a
LOT. I was going to pass it by; I've played 4H 'Rays before, and they just never appealed to me. But, the damage while ugly was just cosmetic - and easily repairable. Everything worked; it balanced very well; it made my fretting hand happy; it was very inexpensive; and it looked... lonely. They had a case that fit it, too, so... it came home with me. The nasty ding is under repair, and it's been set up with a set of 45-100 EB Slinky Cobalt Flats. I'll probably finish the set up tonight; needs a slight string height adjustment and intonation. Then, it will be good to go - and I will have 6 basses with no Herd spot, for a total of 29. Oh, well....
I lost count as the number approached 60.
. No idea where 60 came from as the number is approximately 45 amps. Still
