how to address bullying

It was posted earlier, but what scares me regarding my own kids is the way technology has enhanced bullying. I was bullied in middle school, but I could always go home and have a safe place in my own house. I think the tragedy regarding Amanda and many other kids is that with email, FB, twitter, and texting, these kids can't easily get any time to feel safe. My kids are still very young, but I do worry about them as they get more into the internet. My eldest son wants an iTouch at the age of 7. I'm not getting him one, but I think his best friend is going to get one soon (same age, why he needs it, I don't know). So there's only so long I can hold out until the real world is going to force it's way into my house. Just gonna have to be the mean old dad, I guess.

I don't think young children should have unsupervised access to the internet and if teens are experiencing bullying over it, they should just stop using it, or at least the likes of Facebook and Twitter. Either that or they apply the privacy settings as required.

Now, I realise that isn't entirely right, as they'd be losing out in some respects. However, it's probably the easiest way to avoid that kind of bullying, especially seeing that such places aren't very well moderated.

I just seen this on the 5pm local news yesterday. Teens & 20 somethings bully this guy with Turretts, say something to get him mad and he hits himself. They think it's funny, but the guy has hit himself so much and so hard that he is blind in one eye. :scowl:

I kinda saw it coming by others being bullied.I was in 6th grade.I didnt want it happening to me so I started lifting weights doing push ups,sit ups and anything else to build myself up.The next year I had gym class and was able to do 70 push ups and 400+ situps. Every year I added 10 push ups,Sit ups not so much.Back the we had boxing in PE.The coach put me up against one of the bullies about my size.Round 1 I caught an elbow in the back of my head.I was dazed and shook my head and some booing occurred. It pissed me off and I beat him good. After the match I had blood going down my back and a kid checked me out and said "my finger went in his head,LOL.I went to the nurse,my Dad came and took me to the Dr.s 6 stitches and back to school. In hi school when we had boxing or wrestling the dang coach would use me to go against the greasers as they were called back then.Start working with your kids and their confidence will go up.Im not a big man.but I worked out till I was about 47 or so.Now im a fat 65 year old couch PATATO,Ive got a 10 year old love affair with Bacon LOL

Wait?! A kid going to an ARTS magnet school has no idea who MC Escher is?!

This reminds me of the time Hari Kari came up and my friend wanted to know why it was named after the old Cubs baseball announcer.

Back to the topic at hand: When I was a kid, I got bullied by my cousins. That was acceptable I guess. One time I did tell the principal and my cousin Todd got his butt fired up with the paddle. However, the 2-3 times that I got bullied by someone outside of the family, it was usually put to rest real quick. I grew up thinking my dad was a master with words or something. He could go to these kids homes to have a talk with their old man, and things were solved the next day. I later found out from more than one reliable source that dear old dad had a reputation for being that quiet guy that was not to be messed with. I never in a million years pictured my old man to be a that way, then one day I watched a real big man fall like a house of cards courtesy of the old man's left hand.
