how to address bullying

If your kid ever has to deal with it, teach them how to take care of themselves. Then SUPPORT them if they ever have to act on it. If they defend themselves and get in trouble for it, go to the school and back them up. As always, the peaceful approach is nice, but in the real world it rarely ever works. Understanding ideals like peace takes a little bit if intellect............ not a strong suit for most bullies. A bloody nose? THAT they understand.

My daughter was being harassed by a kid in middle school. A phone call my wife made to his dad put an end to it - turns out it wasn't the first time the dad had gotten that call. The kid had to write an apology to my daughter, and she didn't have any further contact with him.

The voice of reason returns :)

Scorpion - I'm not going to get sucked in to one of your infamous marathon last-word oneupmanship contests. I'd like to believe that your angry, bitter and confrontational Internet persona is a charade, and that actually you are a big, cuddly teddy bear. But then, I'm a bleeding heart liberal that believes in a world full of hugs :)

just because I'm a teddy bear doesn't mean I lack a sadistic side. :D

Lately I just don't see the logic that if seemingly all our world's problems have been solved, why there would be this recurrence of similar events?

The worlds problems haven't been solved. Not by a long shot. Doesn't mean there isn't plenty of good in the world. You just need to know where to look.

If I got started this thread would have to be closed down because I can recant each way those aforementioned progressions rolled backwards the same slope they came.

i think you mean "recount" - you're not going to be taking back anything you previously said, are you? ;)

and pointing out a wrinkle where once there was a pile of excrement is not showing anything "rolling back down the same slope".

But if the nomads did have bullies, that particular member was probably killed off relatively quickly, for the efficiency of the group.

if the bullies got evicted then that particular trait would be gone from the genepool. it's not a recent development that man has tormented his less violently inclined fellow. i'd argue it is the oldest of professions.

no, i'd wager the bullies led the groups, actually - surely you don't think they had some kind of vote going on. in a society where might makes right, the mighty are always right, and those less inclined to exercise their might are conditioned to follow.

the long march of society's progress toward enlightenment has been, at least in part, an exercise in excising that dictum from the lexicon.

and thanks for the "oat soda" but i'll pass. :)

Lately I just don't see the logic that if seemingly all our world's problems have been solved, why there would be this recurrence of similar events?

i don't see how that is relevant (this thread was started, after all, to attempt to discuss an existing obviously unsolved problem), but i'm getting old and probably am missing something obvious, so i'll just be putting up something silly here...

Came across this story in the NY Post as I was catching up on current happenings at my old stomping ground.

We sometimes forget that 'the bully' can be anything from a big meanie, to a certain clique, to a football team (as in this case), to an entire neighborhood (as in my case).

Bloody noses, and dust-ups may work against some of them, some of the time, but not all the time.

I sincerely hope her bullies are scarred for life. I'm not sure how to say this while remaining sensitive but idk maybe some kinda of "good" would come out of it then.....

What if we are just nothing more than animals? What if the state of the world is in it's current form because all our structures, our theories, our ideas......are really nothing more than an inefficient facade that we knew would never really be sustainable? Think about the ancient Romans. That right there is proof our animalistic tendencies manage to override every portion of structure we can formulate. ...

The veneer of civilization is very, very thin indeed. The savage is still there and will appear under the right circumstances.

ok well, since the ball's rolling, let's review:
Women's rights: feminism has been abused, it's not the 50's anymore, whole new ball game.

Welfare: haven't discussed it, but it's good for people that need it
Trade Unions:why not?
Health Care:it's a trap.
Employment rights: you have the right to sit down and shut up working on whatever your assigned.
Hospitals: used to be beneficial, now is a trap, please review "hospice care".
Roads: inevitable necessity.
Transport:redundant.
Communication technology: review "roads".
Voting: illusion of choice.
democracy: illusion of benefit. The dark side is no different.
Art:bull.
Literature:crap.
Music:eventually pointless....

I've tried to curb anything offensive I can possibly say, sorry if I went too far, good day sir.
