How to approach a touchy subject

Let me start by saying I'm not trying to offend anybody with this thread. I need serious input.

My band played a gig on saturday night. We packed the venue, everybody had a great time, the energy was the best its ever been.... maybe the energy was just a tad too high...let me explain.

My drummer and I play shirts off, when the venue allows it. My drummer is a 28 yr old Lacross coach, hes in excellent shape and very popular with the ladies. I'm 22, 6'2'', 180 lbs and go to the gym 4 times a week. We both eat right and take care of ourselves physically and it shows.

The two lead singers/guitarists are a different story. Both are fairly overweight, drink alcohol instead of water, and eat at sheetz exclusively. One is extremely hairy. Great musicians, not pretty people....

anyway, back to the energy being too high.....we were all really getting into it, and those two decided they would remove their shirts as well. Thats NEVER happened before except once in the studio. I dont care, i love the two of them and they are free to look any way they want...but it was kinda scary, and turned off some of the crowd. the girls up front dancing stepped back a little, and a few that id never seen before even left.

after the show my drummer comes to me and says "dude, that cant happen..."

I agree with him. How would you guys approach telling your band mates to either hit the gym or leave there shirts on? or are my drummer and i unfounded?

*edit: the hairy one is already a VERY touchy individual, worth noting

Ah yes.....when fantasy and reality play together and one gets hurt..... LMAO.

Let me put it in perspective as a "fat bass player". I admit, I have ***s and a pot belly. And I'm not proud of it. The one way I can look with some pride in it is of anything, by being fat, I give the ppl what they want already because of how they already look at me and try to fit me in a frame of their minds.

I was once in decent shape, 10 years ago (19). But I had always noticed back then at some level I still had ***s and a pot belly, just smaller sized. I worked out like a beast and was active.

Then one year I focused on school (college) and got used to my face being stuck in a book.

And know what? That ball rolled. It rolled all the way down the hill. And there's a certain point you won't push it back up.

Some people have to get used to this whole world of time is money and money isn't in health lifestyle.

Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health. And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present; the result being that he does not live in the present or the future; he lives as if he is never going to die, and then dies having never really lived.”

Lol funny how that's how it's always been.

Yes, but what is it to "really" have lived?

Is this band management? :p

Ya see. In certain music scenes, the idea of letting go and putting on a great show is the first and only priority. In fact, when someone "less model like" takes their shirt off, it makes it even cooler. Because it kinda throws up a middle finger to the BS culture we are controlled by. Were a beautiful teenage girl makes herself throw up, or carves up her face for others eyes.( I mention females because it is no doubt harder on them)
I'd say the guys in your band are awesome for not caring.
But something tells me that you and I operate on two different playing fields. And thank f'n christ.

If no one has said it. The compromise would be for you guys to wear wife beaters/tank tops if and when you want to take your shirts off.

For me it means ignoring most people when they say "You need to do this" or "You can't do that" and that plays a role in band management as well as every other aspect of life.

I'm also really chuckling visualizing Black Flag telling Henry Rollins to put his shirt back on and get some shorts that fit. :D

:rollno: this is getting tiresome. problem solved. talked to the band ABOUT HIRING A BAND MANAGER ;) they agreed, so when we get one it will be his call. I think this solution incorporates EVERYONES advice.

I think this thread getting out of hand is entirely my fault. I gave no history of the band or our relationships prior to the band, no real description of who I am, or who the other members are. but in a way its helped. ive been able to take everyones anger and support and made a constructive decision based on what I got.

thanks all, im officially done with this thread. I appreciate each and every one of you for taking the time to post and I truly respect 99% of what was said

Meet ...

... the Band Manager.
