How to approach a touchy subject

I'm a handsome devil who would not be hard to look at with no shirt on but you could not pay me to play without one. I'm a bass player, not some kind of Chippendale.

If you dig having your shirt off that's great for you, but I don't see how you could restrict your unattractive band members from doing this without being unreasonable. I'm very big on ensuring that 'what's good for the goose, must be good for the gander'. I live by that and would expect nothing less from the other members of my band

+1

I doubt a shirtless unattractive guy caused anyone to leave, and if this was actually the reason they did, then the energy is better off without them.

Coming from a big, fat, hairy guy, if you don't look reasonable, don't take your shirt off. If you still want to be comfortable/unrefined (and I do, trust me), take a shirt, tear the sleeves off, and let it get a little ratty.

I would say that you and your drummers need to stop being proud. if one of my band mates wanted to take their shirts off to play music, I would play an entire set in front of a crowd of 0. If you are in it to solely make money and "look good" then kick them out and hire some more pretty boys, One Direction.

I agree, but I'm not sure that's the answer the OP is looking for.

Perhaps not. And if not, then that's yet another example of the chronic issue among those who supposedly seek "advice" here on TalkBass, who will heed only suggestions that they've already determined as "acceptable".

That's why so many of the advice threads here are such an exercise in futility, and such a waste of time. Because too often, the OP isn't actually looking for advice, and wants only to play out some kind of psychodrama.

I loled so hard. I say let them take their shirts off and let the stuck up btches leave if they wanna leave.

Do not say anything about them not being attractive that will kill their egos make them feel self conscious and build up resentment between you and them.

If you have a problem looking at them then you need to grow up and get off your high horse.

Physical appearance is a fickle monster u look god now but you can lose all your looks in an instant.

Also have you ever heard of a band named steally Dan.

Besides your going to go off a couple flakey drunk chicks leaving. Have you ever actually observed chicks in a bar? They show up get a seat go to the bar order a shot or two then leave for the next bar.

They could have left for any variety of reasons that had nothing to do with your band.

MM: You sure hit the nail smack dab on the head with THAT one! People already have their mind made up, and when a differing opinion comes along that doesn't match their predetermined position, they either argue it or reject it.

We humans are a silly bunch (and oh so predictable).

The big hairy guys should take their shirts off when the hot chix are dancing close to the stage. When the hot chix freak out and start to split the big hairy shirtless guys start screaming, "You can't handle the truth!!!" I'd pay to see that.

After thinking about this, I realized that ANY band I've ever been in would have used this as a reason to mock and belittle each other... rock and roll is inherently politically incorrect, and if you have the stones to put up with public exposure, a little honesty shouldn't be too much to handle... Lowgun must be a nice fella to be concerned about his friends feelings. Personally, I would have ridden this pony all the way home.

This is exactly what I was thinking when i read the OP. I can't believe it took til page 6 for someone to say it. Do you other people actually play in bands or just church on Sunday or Bob from work's basement or what?

When the hell did musicians get so sensitive? A tour van is worse than any locker room or barracks. I'm with David, I'd have already beat that pony to the ground. Cruxify them unmercilessly til they take the hint.

Well, you started it. I'm sure if you and your drummer had kept your clothes on, the other two would have as well. So, tough luck buddy.

Solution: Keep your clothes ON!

I have to admit that I tend to agree with the people saying that it looks pretty douchey when guys that think they're "hot" get undressed on stage.

Dude, you and your drummer are douche bags plain and simple.
I would have given you two a warning the first time and fired you the second time. The problem is that no one should be taking off your shirts at a show. Very unprofessional and makes me think you two are over compensating for other deficiencies.

Grow the hell up!

Wow what a bunch of grumpy fat old men. The shirtless look has a long storied history in rock and roll. The rule to live by though is similar to the Spandex Rule for Women-It's a Priviledge not a Right! Fat guys and especially old fat guys would be wise to refrain from going topless on stage.

Somebody PLEASE tell Jello this!
