How to approach choosing my bass?

I like the 5 string for regular finger style playing. For thumbing it feels a bit too tight, but I'm sure with couple of weeks training I probably will adjust to it.
If you're willing to put that effort in, then do that as a priority over my BEAD post. In general with modern basses, it's always worthwhile to persevere with what you have and really learn your instrument. It's cheaper but less immediate and certainly not exciting on a forum like TB! I didn't have the patience and dedication to do that when I was younger but I do it now.

My caveat to this: instrument setup and string type/gauge is fair game to obsess and adjust.

Maybe update this thread in a few months after you've spent time with your 5er.
