How To Keep In Time And Relax?

When in doubt Breathe.
In through your nose out through your mouth.
9 times out of 10 this will bring your focus where it belongs.

Worked for these dudes.

A lot of recomendations for 'tapping the foot', i was taught not to tap my foot, or show any outward visible signs of how i was keeping time.
This was very much an orchestral technique that did not allow anyones idea of time interfere with anyone around you.
There are many varied ways in which a player may sub-divide or count out bars, so seeing or hearing anothers would effectively put you off.

Next time you watch an Orchestra, look at their feet, no tapping going on there as a rule.....that is developed internal time, feeling it as well as counting it.:)

Something that I found helpful was a Dave Ellefson (Megadeth) video where he demonstrated playing the bass line while thinking of the drums in half time. The bass line stays the same but it helps to maintain a more fluid sound and can help with timing and cause things to relax a little more. You're rushin', you're rushin'. No I'm not, I'm American! :hiding:

That`s a damn good question. Wish I knew the answer, because I`d be a much better bass player if I did. Often I find that playing standing up can do wonders,IMHO. For myself,I seem to relax and "get into" the beat/timing easier. When my upper body is gently, swaying or moving along with the tune and my playing is when I feel most relaxed--most natural.

Thanks for this thread, btw, some excellent tips and advice herein!

The only way to do it is to learn the material to the point where you can literally play the songs without thinking about them. Once you can rely on your ear, feel and muscle memory you will be fine.

I agree with this comment. You need to know the song well enough to the point where it's like brushing your teeth or even more simply walking on your own two feet. Then since you know how to do it very well you can do it effortlessly and relax.
