How To Keep Your Boyfriend/Husband From Knowing How Many Basses You Have

Sarcasm doesn't fly in text. I'd think most here would know that. Do everyone a favor, say what you mean and mean what you say. Sarcasm is an art of interpersonal communication. It just doesn't work in the cold medium of internet text.

Yes, understood, and especially important to be avoided in a string in the "Humor" section. Even more so when responding to an OP who's entire post was sarcasm. This also, of course, explains the complete failure of the career of Samuel Clemens.

If you have read the string in question, feel free to offer more specific input on my post and how it failed to communicate. If you have not, thank you so much for your thoughts critiquing the quality of communication which you have not read.

I dated a girl that would ride my ass every time I spent money on ANYTHING. I couldn't get her go out on dates to the movies or coffee because it was too expensive for her. (And I'm the token Jew in my town).
She would buy literally anything on sale so she wouldn't have to decide at the store if she liked it or not. She would decide at home then return what she didn't like. Like clockwork she would wait too long and the return period would end and she still had crap she didn't want. Duh.
This was before I got serious about gear. I can't imagine how upset she'd be about me buying a $50 Tubescreamer, no no no! *Wags finger*

Good thing you got out of that one, aye! :smug:

My ex was always very encouraging about a new pedal or some records, which was very helpful considering I have a very hard time committing to spending any amount of money, even buying lunch hahaha.

You, "HeebHammer," are Jewish? I NEVER would have guessed that!

Oh wait, I am SO sorry, that was sarcasm wasn't it?

Oh no, that last sentence was sarcastic TOO! I just can't stop myself!!!! It's just hopeless. I don't know how to stop!

Oh god, THAT was sarcastic too.....

I thought the same thing when I read those threads. Seems pretty disrespectful. (If I buy a new bass, I tell everyone, not hide it from people.)

I totally agree with this part. Almost everybody knows if I get a new bass!

I always tell my wife about a new piece of gear that I "need". 8 times out of 10, she just says "ok" and I go buy it. The other two times she asks "do you REAALLY need that?", to which I usually reply "not right at this moment, but, eventually, yes.". Then I wait a week or so, tell her I found one that someone was "practically giving away", and I go buy it...:D

This method has made us both very happy ;)

I'm fairly reasonable about purchases to begin with, except for this year. I did buy a little too much stuff this year, but I run everything by my wife just to make sure I'm not about to spend money on something really stupid or when we have major bills we have to pay.

I want my wife to be happy in life. I therefore encourage her to pursue her interests and purchases.

I sure hope that's how it's supposed to be, because if not, we are really messed up! :hmm:

Yes, this. You're too darn quotable.

My situation is this, my girl has spent all of our money for years on her family that won't work & I did without for over a decade. She squawked when I bought a bass with my money so the next one I bought I hid from her, when she found out she hit the roof. So I said so you get a job & keep your money & I'll keep mine(keeping in mind she hasn't worked in 10 years)finally she apologized & I told her NEVER to bother me again about purchasing gear.

Well, honestly, there are households that make good money and live comfortably and can spend what they want on themselves, more or less, whether that's clothes or a vacation or big TVs or music gear or whatever. In those kinds of households, if one partner wants to spend all that discretionary money on a new amp or something, no big deal, and the other partner giving them grief over it isn't warranted.

There are other households (including mine) where the budget is tight, there are lots of expenses on the horizon, kids to think of, and an impulse buy of more than $20 or $30 really is going to mean trouble paying something important next month. In those households, I think it's perfectly fair for the partners to keep each other accountable and to say no, it's not OK that you just sank us $700 in extra credit card debt because you wanted a fifth bass. That's not micromanaging, that's treating the family as a unit. It sucks to be at the receiving end of it, and humor is a way of venting the stress. But at the end of the day, I think it's valid.

Here's a trick:
Always keep a few of your instruments loaned out to friends, so your wife won't see ALL of your stuff at home at the same time.

Sarcasm:
Because punching someone in the face is against the law.

If I pull out a bass she hasn't seen for a while, my wife might ask if it is new, but that is about it. Before we were married, I told her I was on my way to buy a bass we had looked at that was in a town about 40 miles away. When I got to the store, she was on the phone with the owner purchasing it for me. She hasn't changed since we've been married. If I want something, I get it. If she wants something, she gets it.

If he has a problem with how you spend your money and what you spend it on, dump his @$$. Simple!

No, really. I just saw two similar threads about how to keep your wife from knowing how many basses you have and I was like, :rollno:.

Guys, why is this a thing with girlfriends/wives? Are there really that many women who exist in this world solely to micromanage your finances? Or are there some bigger issues at play here? Man, you guys have some messed up relationships if you have to lie about what you buy and where you keep it. I know it's a joke but it's kinda lame to joke about lying to your "clueless" girlfriend or wife.

With all due respect to the sausage-fest that is TalkBass, um...what? Can someone explain to me why this is funny?

I pay my bills & keep the house stocked with food. My GF could care less what I spend my extra money on. ^_^ Luckily, I curb myself and won't allow myself to own more than 4 at a time. Usually 2 of these are projects.
