That's actually easy, if you have the right equipment. Put the pickup in a glass bell jar and evacuate it (pull a vacuum) The hum persists just fine without air - it's an electromagnetic wave, like light from distant stars, which can travel billions of light years without air.

If you had said hum travels through the air, I'd give you that. However, you said hum comes from the air, which is very different. Hence my attempt at clarification.

whoops...until you're not.....To make hum disappear on single coil pickups, it's simple, hold your instrument straight vertically regarding the floor. Boom! You're done with hum.

Electromagnetic hum and electrostatic interference are different things. When someone says they've shielded their single coils and they're now silent, they have dealt with the electrostatic fields via shielding, but haven't (despite their insistence) dealt with electromagnetic hum, which shielding won't fix. Is this what you're asking about?
Getting the words right is important in my work (pro audio gear) - if we don't know what the problem is, we can waste a year solving the wrong problem.
