How to make hum disappear on single coil pickups (finally!!)

Roll off some high end with the tone knob. You'll never even hear the hum.

That's actually easy, if you have the right equipment. Put the pickup in a glass bell jar and evacuate it (pull a vacuum) The hum persists just fine without air - it's an electromagnetic wave, like light from distant stars, which can travel billions of light years without air.

You both were insisting on the word "air" when you clearly knew I was talking about "wirelessly". :D

Electromagnetic hum and electrostatic interference are different things. When someone says they've shielded their single coils and they're now silent, they have dealt with the electrostatic fields via shielding, but haven't (despite their insistence) dealt with electromagnetic hum, which shielding won't fix. Is this what you're asking about?

Getting the words right is important in my work (pro audio gear) - if we don't know what the problem is, we can waste a year solving the wrong problem.

That's exactly that. But most people think shielding pickups is helping to remove the electromagnetic hum
I know the difference now :)

I always thought it was important when ordering fast food, too...

... dang it, if they don't get that order wrong, no matter which words I use.
