I have yet to consider a single piece of computer generated music, such as used in much of the RAP world, to be good.
Computers may be a good way to avoid paying musicians; but they are not good at making music.
SMH
Sigh

A lot of complaints about using computers in music. It’s pretty hard to avoid these days since we won’t be going back to tape or cutting direct to disc any time soon.
As far as sequencing, there is a huge difference between sequencing a composition and just hitting the random button and hoping for the best.
Here’s a piece written by George Anthiel from 1924 that was scored for 16 player pianos. Modern performances use Yamaha Disklavier grand pianos which can record and play back using MIDI.
Do you really wonder?Always interesting that this kind of stuff is never used as an example of bad music made by computers, but rap is. Wonder what that's about!
1. I amended my post to make it a little more obvious.Do you really wonder?
I hear you. Other than the extremely obvious it's probably exposure. Rap/hip hop is everywhere and has been offending the same people and their offspring since day one. Eno and stuff like that was never brought to the mainstream in great numbers.1. I amended my post to make it a little more obvious.
2. No, I know exactly what that's about but I don't want to get too confrontational.
True enough! Unfortunately just about everything is done with computers at this point, and of course the hallmark of hip hop is very much not the fact that it's done with computers.I hear you. I'll be 58 in a month or so and have found more new, or new to me, cool stuff the past ten years than the twenty previous. It's out there. We just need to dig a bit.True enough! Also, a lot of the new stuff just isn't very good, but I think that's just because I am Getting Old (mid thirties).
Oh, I was talking about in the realm of hip hop specifically. Agreed that a lot of really cool stuff is happening in music right now generally, though.I'll be 58 in a month or so and have found more new, or new to me, cool stuff the past ten years than the twenty previous. FTR, I NEVER said Rap was “Bad.” What I posted was that I believe it would more hip to use talented musicians instead of the computers; and, if done correctly, that would make the music more interesting.Always interesting that this kind of stuff, or Brian Eno, or even new wave and post punk, are never used as examples of bad music made by computers, but rap always immediately is. Wonder what that's about!
Please stop inferring nastiness where none exists. Our pop music has been diverse for as long as it has been played. The concept of Rap is great - basically modern beatnik music. thumbs up. My suggesting the music could be improved by using capable improv musicians has zero to do with the nastiness you are apparently seeking to inject. Ply your wares elsewhere.I hear you. So a few Jazz - and ECM artists who are good readers and composers as well as improvisers have used DJs and RAP and computer generated or sequenced music.
His politics and ridiculous hyper-machismo schtick aside, he's a mediocre guitarist and singer at best, and his 70's screech-rock did not hold up well. Another Blowhard with the perpetual chip on his shoulder, but now nobody cares about knocking it off. Meh.Ted Nugent - I listened to him as a young teen but felt unsafe in one of his concerts. Me and my friend decided to leave midway for fear of being beaten in the parking lot. Did not know about his politics until went to a show.
