How would you define your style of playing?

I've played in power trios almost exclusively for decades so "filling in" the sound is something I've always strove for. I have been told that I "drive" my band which was a huge complement. I incorporate influences from JPJ, John Entwistle (percussive and dynamic playing), Steve Harris and the melodic inspiration of Michael Schenker into my bass "vision". Oh, I'm BIG into layers :)

Adaptive. Ears always on.

When in my element, jazz, I love playing with chromaticism and dissonance. I don't do it too often though, as it can really throw some for a loop. I also enjoy rhythm play, dancing around the beat.

When playing everything else, I'm hyper focused on maintaining time and supporting the chord progression.

I'd hire you over any other candidate if you told me that in a job interview haha

Like @Joe Nerve said, that one made me think, too. I don't really have a style of my own, I just try to play the appropriate notes at the right time/place. Mel Schacher's style of playing, whatever you would call that, is what first attracted me to bass. Felix Pappalardi, Chris Squire and Gary Thain have helped me add color to my palette. No solos though, I'm strictly a team player.

I define myself as mediocre.

The Mediocre Bassist Club

Me too! It's an interesting question. I'm not fancy, don't play a lot of frills, try to serve the song with what it needs. Someone this past weekend said I was a "melodic" bassist. When I feel up to it, sometimes i do play a few melodic runs. Mostly I try to stay in the pocket and play whatever works for the feel of the song. But I'll never be fast or fancy.

This, pretty much. When I learned to play, this song wasn't a Golden Oldie; my band actually played it a lot. Since we were GIs, stationed overseas and playing to a bunch of other GIs, this was a pretty popular sentiment. And, this kind of Rock - and even earlier Rock, Rockabilly, and really old Country - is still what I like to play. I have no desire to bother with anything recorded much after 1970 or so... now, get off my lawn.
