Can anyone explain to me how it works that the price in europe (the netherlands) of this bass is around 2000 Euro's, wich is around 2834 American Dollars, while on Ebay they are sold for 1500 american dollars, wich is 1058 Euro's.. The fender website sets the price at around 2200 Dollars, but that would still be only 1550 Euro's.. I refuse to pay more than 2 times as much as the ebay-american price, but think I have to play this type of instrument to feel if it's a good one.. Any insight would be very helpfull, also if you want to share your experiences with the bass! Love, Rzp.

Huge Price differences American vintage JB '62 RI?

They cost about $2200 AUD in Melbourne, but the mark ups are as follows for us overseas (I think):
Cost of bass + Shipping Cost + Duty/Customs + Mark up from local distributor + Mark up from Shop.
Though, I could be horribly wrong.

Well isn't your fuel costs almost twice what the US is? taxes and transportation!
It costs alot for a company to sell product in another country. Like mentioned: item cost, shipping costs (both initial and small % padded to account for returns/exchanges/warranty), export/import fees. Then once it gets into said country: distributor mark-up, then retail store mark-up.

So would you guys think it would be wiser to just get one of ebay? Have it shipped for say 100 usd, and it would still be less than half the price I'd pay in a dutch store.. Only thing is that I wouldn't have played it first.. Worth the risk?
If you did this you would still have to pay import duty and any local taxes too.
IMO,.. not only is it worth the risk & fees, if you don't like it, you could sell it for a profit!
the fit & finish on the AV62RI is second only to Fender CS by a tiny margin. i've seen them sell for ~$950. on TB. GL

IMO, i'd buy a new one off of ebay from a reputable seller so save that much $. i really haven't seen, played, or worked on a bad '62 AV RI j bass yet. some were set up better than others, but that's easily remedied. IMO, that and the AV RI p basses, strats, and teles are the best thing that fender makes.
Mostly, it's the Value Added Tax the EU charges.
I'm not so sure that you'll have to pay import taxes/duties if you buy on ebay. I sell a lot of stuff to Europe on ebay, and at the customer's request, I check "gift" in the customs declaration form.
Another thing you could do, considering the price difference, is take a vacation in the US, buy a bass and bring it back with you. At customs, say you brought it with you.
Yes, you will have to pay import taxes and VAT on stuff that you buy on eBay. The worst thing is that the import tax is calculated over the value of the item plus shipping and then you have to pay VAT over that amount. Only items with a value of less than 35 Euros (including shipping) make it through customs in Holland without being taxed. Items with a higher value may slip through because not everything is checked, but I would not gamble on that.
I dunno, I've sent stuff to the EU checked "gift" (at the buyer's insistence) and the buyer didn't get whacked with taxes. And all packages were worth significantly more than $35.
I just completed a transaction with a guy in Russia who sais there is a limit of 1000 in customs,don't know how it is for other countries

^ I did this, but with a used AV62 RI P. No tax when coming into the country, they didn't even ask about it.
^ +1 just scour TB and try to find someone willing to ship internationally, 9 times out of 10 It will still come out cheaper than buying a new one (in Australia anyway) even after customs + duty + shipping.
Alternatively, isn't there a bass forum thats local to your part of the world? I know Australia has OzBass and I see the occasional used AVRI bass. Why just last week, I saw an AV62RI Jazz for $1300 AUD ish (A steal, by local standards).
If that's the case, try a company like shipito.com that will forward your parcel to you. That was you can buy from any online store in the US, have it shipped to a US address, and the freight company will then send it onto you.

too bad that AV62RI in the classified is CONUS ONLY. maybe you could entice him with some local souvenirs.
