How many litres in everyone's gallons? US couldn't even keep to the regular old gallon and had to make up their own.
Race gas is 110 or higher octane versus the 87 to 91 octane gas that most street cars run on.
I can get by with as little as 100 octane in my car, although it runs best on 110. Otoh, the 2000 Corvette we built years ago required 118 octane fuel..... but that car produced nearly 1100 horsepower on engine alone and just over 1500 with the nitrous engaged.
Tax wise I have no idea.... most distributors of race gas buy it by the 55 gallon drum and sell it as needed to the consumer. I don't know of any commercial fuel stations that sell it....
I think the Canadians are the ones that came up with the imperial gallon.... not the USA. Afaik, the gallon has been the same for the 52 years I've been alive....
Cheaper than petrol?? Wish it was the same here. 87 octane gas is in the $2.55 range and diesel is right about $3.
Then again my mileage from the diesel truck is far better than the gas one, so I do wind up saving in the end.

Valid point. Years ago our tires were what they called "Alpha Numeric" and we had sizes like A 78 13 or N 50 15.
Then came along the P metric sizing..... P 235 70 15 and the like.
Well, race and mud tires are pretty much sized differently. The tires on my Camaro are 31x16.5x15 and the tires on my Blazer are 18.5x44x16.5
So I had to google it. Apparently the US colonists adopted the gallon used for wine whereas in the progressive old country the went with a bigger one. Fun fact, there were originally different volumetric gallons for all kinds of dry goods.

Yes, cheaper than petrol, but for diesel powered cars road tax is almost twice as much. Plus there's an extra diesel tax when buying a new diesel powered car.
USA octane is an average of RON + MON .
I remember seeing gas pumps in Paris offering 98 octane fuel and I was surprised by that..... until I realized that they calculate their octane rating on a different scale than we do in the US.
So your road tax is calculated not only by vehicle weight but also the type of fuel used??

Yeah - that’s rough in Europe. I once spent $1000 CAD in fuel on day trip from southern England to Scotland and back (in 24 hours).
Conversely, I was driving an F150 in New Jersey earlier this fall. Cost me same to fill that up as it does my Subaru here at home.
Yes it is. It's a sad situation. Over here many fun cars aren't sold anymore. I bought one of the last GT86's.
