I've seen him sit in with Ian Hunter, and with Beck years ago. He was not exceptional, but he was competent. Beck does whatever the hell he wants, I don't think he "needs" Depp, any more than Depp needs Beck. I listened to an interview with them on Little Steven's Sirius Radio channel, they have a genuine rapport, and there was deference to Beck on Johnny's part. I can think of worse musical 'posing' on the part of other actors…Bruce Willis, Steven Segal, even Belushi/Aykroyd. As for the HV, it's just a side thing for fun, a Busman's Holliday, a chance to play favorite covers. If Depp was so miserable, why would pros like Cooper and Perry put up with him? They have their own following. It keeps people entertained, and it keeps a friend of mine, Chris(the bass player), employed.

On one hand I get the reaction when someone known as an actor is seen playing an instrument--it's like --"Hey they act--leave the music to us musicians!"
But on the other hand it could be jealousy

Of course not everybody has the same reaction or the same reason for it.

I'll admit that I was completely skeptical of him the first time I heard about the "super group" Hollywood Vampires band. I actually have both albums and just recently listened to the new collaboration with him and Jeff Beck and think they're all pretty damn good. Is Depp a guitar virtuoso like Vai or Yngwie? Definitely not but, he actually is a good rhythm guitarist, can actually sing, and from what I've read, really knows music as well as the history of great iconic musicians and bands. If he gets high praises from Jeff Beck and other top musicians, that's good enough for me. I'd tell anyone to seriously give him a chance if you think he's just another Hollywood actor trying to be a musician. He's been doing it ever since the Viper Room days on the Sunset Strip.

it's a funny thing, but when an unknown average guy plays guitar or bass, and does at least an adequate job, most of us quite enjoy the music if the band is a genre we like. no one says he's a poseur. why can't JD be a famous actor and celeb who likes to play guitar (and has spent the time learning to do so) and still be an enjoyable musician?

why would it be different for a celeb who also plays guitar? do they have to be a spectacular player and held to a much higher standard? not all members of famous bands are truly great players.

just sayin'...
