Glad to hear you're slowing it down. It can seem boring at times, but keep in mind why it is important: Every time you play something incorrectly, you've just practiced playing incorrectly. It's not "practice makes perfect"; it's "perfect practice makes perfect"! Speed will come, but you have to be patient.Thank you all for your replies so far.
Indeed, I have been practicing the passages from the song that spanked my booteeh at half speed and even doing the 4 bars with click on and 4 bars with click off excercise and trying to relax more.
I think part of my issue is that, if I'm not mistaken, playing on time with a click/drums means I "shouldn't" hear the click because my note should be directly on top of it. But that kind of leaves me lost. I believe that's kind of why I'm rushing. I play a note before the beat and when my brain hears the click I think that's when I feel "on time".
As for hearing the clicks, try turning down your bass/amp or turning up the volume on the metronome (or move it closer to your ear). Then you'll be able to hear both the note and the click simultaneously and you'll know when you're nailing it.
Good luck!
