I bought the garbage pail kids ray

Well as the title says, I bought it. I’m gonna refinish the bass b/c I don’t like the finish and I’m not a fan of how the headstock is different than the body. I want to do a paint of paisley finish on this one.

I haven’t received the bass yet but I’ll post pics as I get the work done.

I though of getting this myself and I like the treatment to the bass and would keep it as is.

That said, before you do anything to it, play it for a while. This has been returned to GC several times over the past few months. More often than not, that is a an indication that something is wrong with the bass, especially at such a low price.

You might want to make sure the neck is ok, the truss Rod works, the electronics are original etc. this has been returned too many times for it to be just a matter of everyone buying it changing their mind about the stickers.

Sold for $999 so yes, by a few hundred dollars at least. Look at the GC used listings and you will see that they typically sell in the mid to upper teens.

I wonder if there is a Garbage Pail Kids collector who would buy it if you listed it on something like eBay. This has to be a one of one refinish.

I wouldn't want it, but whoever did this did a good job.

I can't say I understand the point of buying a one-off custom finish instrument with the plans to refinish it. It's not like a Stingray is a particularly rare instrument where this is your only chance to buy one.

Yep my guess is that it is a mess based on my GC Used experiences

Or maybe find someone on TALKBASS to trade a boring stingray body for it???

It may be a really messy and lengthy process to refinish... perhaps outweighing the value you saved.
I've refinished several basses, none had extra layers of paper, finish and adhesives.
Every time that I'm sanding the parts between the horns, I promise myself NEVER AGAIN.

Furthermore, sometimes radical refinishes such as this are covering up an actual problem that someone wanted to hide, like a stupid pick-up routing.
(That why My 78 Ibanez Musician has a pick guard now )

If it ends up being a quality job on the body then I may keep it and sticker up the headstock. I’m not afraid to refinish my basses. I prefer to refinish old raggedy stuff over nice new stuff.

I'm in the camp that would leave this one-off as-is. There's a person out there who doesn't have your excellent craftiness who has been waiting for this bass, even if they don't know it yet.

Your lavenderish/grayish (on my monitor anyway) finish is awesome. Photo ending in 6464. The red is nice as well, but the other just grabs me. Always like seeing your projects.

That bass is my 2001 Ebmm sterling. I love paisley so I had to make a paisley bass. The bass is actually dark blue with white paisley.
