It’s stickers. Looks like they started to strip it before the stickers.

It makes me so happy to see you bought this. I've had it in my cart maybe 10 times thinking it would be a fun refinishing project but never got around to actually purchasing, so I'm going to be living vicariously through your updates for the foreseeable future.

I absolutely love garbage pail kids. I had a huge pile in 2nd grade. For those that don’t understand, maybe you had to be born in the late 70s. My sister had the dolls so it all made perfect sense to me.

Refinish it. It’s likely a biohazard as is.

That photo really threw me, as for a second I thought "I don't remember Johnny Temple covering his bass in Garbage Pail Kids stickers", then I looked closer at his face, and saw it was Andy Rapoprt of Kingface.

I guess it must have been 1987, the bass, the haircut, and the Soulside t-shirt that threw me.

Johnny Temple played a Guild Pilot in Soulside, and on the early Girls Against Boys records.

I have seen Stingrays from that era with chipped paint like that. I think once it gets a serious ding the paint comes off in pieces. It makes me nervous because I have one, but so far only a little buckle rash chipping on the back contour.

Does yours have super sharp polepiece edges? That is the only other problem with mine…

So far your work looks great!

No on the pole pieces. I have a black ray 5 that the paint is peeling on also. This is where the bass is now. I’m gonna do a paint over paisley relic.

What year is that ’ray?
Based upon your other refins, this is going to look really cool when you’re done with it.

Can you do paisley over a clear or tinted clear finish? The original amber with a hydrodip pattern would be pretty cool.

It’s a 2007. The body needs to be painted before it can be hydro dipped. Hydrographic paint has a dip window of 12 months where normal autozone car paint has a dip window of 24-48 hours. The dip window starts after the last coat of paint and all the hydro dip and clear coat need to be done before the window closes.
