I don't care for the Bongo's looks with a passion, it's just ugly beyond belief...IMHO 
As for the sound, I think it sounds fantastic!
Back to the design, here is what I think:
- no pickguard will be a huge improvement. I don't like ANY of the MM pickguard designs, but they don't look as bad on the vintage looking models.
- how about a coffee table Bongo? Made of swamp ash and with clear or transparent finishes.
- What was all the hype that BMW designed it? Who gives a rat's behind? The modern vibe is ruined by the vintage bridge and the hideous headstock, specially on the 5'er & 6'er.
- Back to the bridge, if they wanted to keep the modern vibe, how about a headless version? Or a headed version but with mono-rail style bridge and a minimal headstock with modern tuners?

The next best thing to having no pickguard on a Bongo is, IMO, the Stealth version where the pickguard is hardly noticible as a pickguard at all. It looks like a teardrop panel groove instead.

However, there are plenty of bass designs that I find quite unappealing, and so I don't judge anyone who gacks up a little bile whenever they see a Bongo. Heck, I fall into a bit of a boredom coma whenever I see a P or J bass design. To each their own, right?

seeing the recent BMW cars, I would not let them design anything, am I the only one who finds the newer (2006 and up) cars hideous?

my problem is it was designed by bmw.
im not a fan of bmw's, audi's and mercs
i liked how they played though but my problem is they got bmw to design it because most of there basses were kinda like variations on the stingray but most bmw cars havent changed too much over the years ether.
saying this i kinda like the styling. its like a post modern stingray. it grows on you too

Actually this is a NBD thread and an attempt to be funny. I know the Bongo's not everyone's cup of tea, but it is mine and I'll drink it by the gallon!
I *really* wanted to love my Bongo. I did! I got past the odd look and embraced what was good...
But the design bugged me in a few small ways: I found it really uncomfortable to play while sitting... I found it a bit heavy.... and I found it was a bit narrow in the fingerboard for my tastes (I had a 5). But it did sound very cool - and I thought it looked good too.
So I'm no "Hater" - I just didn't dig it.

I saw your comment about playing with it sitting, but I haven't had a problem with that at all. I love the spacing as well. You are right, it looks and sounds great!
You could start a thread on what name would have been better than Bongo. Personally I agree. I think this is body that was designed by someone on the BMW engineering team or something. It plays beautifully, it has a very unique body feel when playing seated (you need to give it a bit of "room" if you get what I'm saying). But it's a nice Bass. But the name DOES sound like a Chimpanzee on a children's show.
It could have been called something in ancient Latin or modern French (Chanteur, Verre, Pierre-Oiseau = Bird, Glass, Song-Stone). But "BONGO"?
To be honest, I owned a single pup one. I liked it, except I did not however like the flimsy neck movement. It just did not seem solid to me. The neck moved way to much forward if pushed on gently. I did like the action and tone, but I felt like it would break if played to hard. My Sting Ray at the time was like a rock compared to it.

There is no question about it. I have never had a bass that I have enjoyed this much.
I got my Bongo 5HH on Wednesday. I had it sent to my work address and when I opened it both of the women that work in the front office could not stop talking about how great the bass looked. I have had a few basses shipped there and they never have reacted this way. In fact, they never seem to care.
I went and plugged the bass up and really loved the sound of it. I was really digging the pre amp and the ability to shape everything! Low mid, high mid, treble, and bass. It's got a SUPER powerful preamp and sounds wonderful. Unfortunately I had to go to a night class so I left and came back later that night for band practice. I was looking forward to utilizing the 4 band pre at band practice. This is for my church's Sunday morning service. I set the Pre flat and I didn't adjust it all night. Worked perfectly and was very "supportive" of the mix. Also, the low B is to die for!
I played the bass this morning at church and got a ton of compliments on both the look and sound.
I guess I was a bass snob before. I didn't want a bass made of basswood, even though I've had a couple that have sounded great. Just the stigma of listening to people with opinions I guess. The Bongo is great, basswood and all!
The Bongo is perfect for me even though it has a combination of things that I never sought out in a bass:
1. Basswood body
2. 17.5mm spacing (thought I had to have 19)
3. A painted neck
4. Odd body shape
The bass play well, looks great, sounds amazing, and is rock solid.
I couldn't be happier!!!
Mine's gold (Geaux Saints!) and has the piezo pickup, but otherwise is the same bass. I like mine a lot, too.

That's odd. My Bongo is just as sturdy as any SR5 i've had.
