I believe he's referring to the fingerboard as slab, not the body.

My understanding is, the original P bass necks were cut with a flat surface to apply the fretboard to, and the fretboard itself was flat on the bottom, and shaped on top to produce the radius. Later necks were shaped on top, then a thinner fretboard applied to that.

Why do they call these years slab? I thought anything that's a solid body is considered slab?

Indeed, the "Slab board" era was about the rosewood used for the fretboard. Don't get it confused with the general of 'slab' for electric bass, or even there are some UK slab Precisions that were made in a small batch run for England only, that had the 'modern' Precision shape and pickguard but no arm cut away and less of a radius to the rest of the body.
that's fantastic, I can't imagine there are too many p basses that out-cool this one. that thing is quite pungent, in a good way.
