Yeah, more than a few "name" Jazz cat bass players use Ibanez, and all the purists sqwauk and the others say IBANEZ IS CRAP.
So tired of people who can't look past the name on the headstock or the shape of the bass. If the tone is killing and your playing is killin and no one else in the ensemble gives two craps then neither should anyone else.

All I gotta say is that Ive got 30+ years professional experience (as in, I play bass for my job and make my payments by playing bass - this included recording before the advent of home DAWs). if you want to call what I say "narrow-minded BS", feel free.....I dont understand what Im being "narrow minded" about: I never said the P-Bass sound was a useless tool: its not. I also never said P-basses were "One Trick Ponies" -- it the hands of the right player, they can do a bunch of things, but a standard single PU P-bass is still limiting in that regard.Click my sig, scroll down to the last song "Old Skool Town".....its through the whole song but fast forward to the chorus and especially toward the end of the song...Hear that P-bass? I prefer mine with a jazz neck, then they are perfect IMHO.

We all have our own likes and dislikes. Luckily they make several different basses to fit our varied tastes. There's no wrong or right......worse or better. Play whatever fits you.
On second thought maybe there is a right bass for each of us......it will be the one that feels good and sounds good to you.
I stated in a post that I have always played Fenders. It's what I like. Do I think everyone should? Do I think they are better than any other bass out there? Hell no! And you'll never see me jump on a thread about any other bass and cut it down.
I have my favorite players like everyone else. If I buy the same bass they play will I sound like them? I don't think so.
Play whatever you like, whatever feels and sounds good to you and most of all, enjoy the hell out of it.

I'm completely willing to adopt any homeless P, regardless of color, pickguard or fretboard type, I will keep it warm and dry, will give it good set-ups on a regular basis, will keep it tuned as best I can, and give it a good clean gigbag or case to sleep in, there's room at the INN so you can start sending them to me any time, lets get these bass's off the street and give them a chance of a brighter future !
Folks, please!!! I never intended this to become a "P basses slay EVERYTHING" thread! I just wanted to iterate that I finally get why people love Ps so much. As I said, my main bass is an Ibby, and it'll probably stay that way, because I needed something to cut through those pesky geetar players encroaching on my sonic territory.

Im am in no way frustrated by your semantics. You said P Basses are limited, I said they werent.
I started on a P bass, moved on to a Jazz 5, then a P/J 5, then a Bass VI, then another P/j, and now I'm back to a P bass. I have a jazz and a P/J for situational stuff, but the precision just has that classic sound, and the plug and play aspect is useful. Love a p bass!
P-basses are da bomb. They stomp all others. I once saw a fool in a Guitar Center reach for some sort of wimpy Ibanez jazz thing and the nearby P-bass just reached over and slapped it right out of his hand. The Ibby hit the floor and was instant kindling. Of course, if a P-bass had taken that fall, it would not only have survived, it would still be in tune, because P-BASSES ARE AWESOME.
P-basses are the official weapon of choice for several former Russian republics. They are the only bass that both sits in the mix while cutting through and simultaneously running out the back door of the club to max out your credit cards at the massage parlor/tattoo shop next door to the gig. P-basses are inherently badass and cannot be stopped. They make all other bass configurations look sick. In fact other bass configurations will make you sick. Literally, I once tried to play a Musicman bass and I got the runs something terrible for three days. That would not have happened with a P-bass.
Besides, everyone knows jazz is just playing the wrong notes.

My bass is an active/passive P with a humbucker.I like a lot of different basses. One of my favorite things to do is go to GC after work (it's a few blocks away), and play all the different basses through all the different amps. Fun fact: my GC has a great selection and a wonderful staff. They know me by name. I really like active humbucker basses, like my new Ibby SR405EQM, but man... Those Ps!!! I didn't get it at first. At all. I thought active humbucker basses and jazz basses outstripped Ps by a mile. I own several P/J basses, and ALL of them have the P pups soloed. So here's to being happily wrong!!!

I own 3 basses: a '72 J, a CS Jaco fretless and recently a CS '59 P and I love all three of them. I play jazz, rock, impro, world or whatever and can play my gigs on any of these basses I got in my gigbag. It depends on the gig, but IMO 95% of your audience woudn't even notice the difference.
Study hard and rehearse as much as you can; then go out and play the crap out of your basses.

Once again, theres a difference between "Limit" and "One Trick Pony"......but you asked me to name something a single PU P can't do and I did of which you are just batting off: I would say youre the closed-minded individual in that regard
