Yes they are! I learnt how to play on one some 35 years ago and I always come back to them. Simple, musical, powerful, comfortable, rugged etc etc etc.

Cutting through is an amp and/or EQ issue. I've been asked to turn down because I was drowning out 2 guitars and a drummer with my P.Folks, please!!! I never intended this to become a "P basses slay EVERYTHING" thread! I just wanted to iterate that I finally get why people love Ps so much. As I said, my main bass is an Ibby, and it'll probably stay that way, because I needed something to cut through those pesky geetar players encroaching on my sonic territory.Let's all be friends, and remember that there are different strokes for different folks!!!
I shook the walls literally at my church last Sunday with my P. It wasn't even that loud but just the pure bassiness of it cut through everythinng. Man I couldn't help but smile.

P-Basses are great when that sound (or variation of) is required. Ill leave it at that

I played P Basses most of my life and always had the same complaint...it needs a bridge pickup. So I sold my single split P versions, got p/js, sold them, got more single pickups versions, sold them and round and round we go. I always want a P Bass, until I have one, and then I want something lighter and more versatile. Now for the first time since I began playing in the early 80s I have zero Fender basses. And, of course, I'm looking for a P Bass.
I don't own a Fender either. My 2 P style 5strings are MTD. Sometimes when you desire features like a lighter weight, comfortable neck, wider string spacing , different look, etc, you have to go with another brand.
I tried, hard, to love a P. I'll always keep my first bass so I have one if I need it. In any case, as you guys get infected with the P-zombie virus, please send your jazzes my way - I'm the @Gravedigger Dav of j's!

I used to own an Ibanez SR400 with a PJ configuration. If I remember correctly, I always had the blend knob soloing the P pickup and rarely both or just the J. I was a noob at bass at the time and I really liked the punch and fat sound the P pickup have. Mind you, it was an active set with an onboard preamp but yeah, I think that's what I've been wanting from a bass I own.
Jazzes are great. I've used them for three years and I love my Geddy Lee bass to death, but I need something naturally more phatty and punchy. And that is a P Bass

I hope she's doing well! I did love it, I just don't like P's enough compared to jazzes to justify having 2... and I can't give up my Mako - too much sentimentality attached to it now. So selling allowed me to get a US 70's Fender J, my dream bass. I still play the Mako P from time to time, so sonically I'm covered
Edit / PS: I do find the P punchier, but not phatter. My J's have a deep bassy characteristic unmatched by any P I've tried.

I like a lot of different basses. One of my favorite things to do is go to GC after work (it's a few blocks away), and play all the different basses through all the different amps. Fun fact: my GC has a great selection and a wonderful staff. They know me by name. I really like active humbucker basses, like my new Ibby SR405EQM, but man... Those Ps!!! I didn't get it at first. At all. I thought active humbucker basses and jazz basses outstripped Ps by a mile. I own several P/J basses, and ALL of them have the P pups soloed. So here's to being happily wrong!!!
I guarantee that those guys know you by name and it's probably not a nice name.
