I got my first P in 35 years of playing last Spring purely for the look (trying to fit a look for a particular show). I'm still not quite pleased with its sound by itself, but DAMN, it sure does fit beautifully in the mix.

Me too man, and I've always been an Ibanez guy for a long time...but with the harder and raw stuff i do with one band right now, it's all P bass pickup on a Spector.

What?, it cant sound like a J Bass? That's not a limitation to people who like P Basses.

You keep changing the focus of our conversation to fit your narrative. Please go back and read all my posts: I never said a P-bass cant be used for any style of music. If you feel like playing smooth funk/jazz on a Gibson EB-0 with the tone rolled off, by all means do so. But is that the optimum for the modern smooth jazz sound? Same thing with P-Basses: there are other instruments ( KEY: many of which can get the P-bass sound when needed) that are optimal for certain production needs that the standard single PU P-bass isnt the best suited for or unable to do. If you can not understand this point, I don't know what else to tell you

I don't own a Fender either. My 2 P style 5strings are MTD. Sometimes when you desire features like a lighter weight, comfortable neck, wider string spacing , different look, etc, you have to go with another brand.

I have an MTD KZ5 and an Heir 5 fretless. I have become addicted to the MTD Kingston line. I hope one day they'll out out a PJ.

I didnt change anything, you're the one throwing out a bunch of semantic crap trying to deflect my rebuttal of your original point-
Pbasses arent limited or one trick ponies, though a player with a limited mindset can be.

Unfortunately, it doesn't do everything well like P-Basses lovers think hence the reason why see these "Go P-Bass Threads" all the time (because only P-Bass lovers think it can do everything.

I'm in agreement. But, I really love my SBMM Ray 34. And my Geddy Lee Jazz is tops too. The thump of a P is unmatched.

I really want to like P basses, but I can never seem to get one to not be buried below everything else in an awful way. Hopefully one day it will click with me, too.

I always hear about how great of a bass it is for rock, but I just get walked all over when I play one. Am I doing something wrong?

go back through our posts: you told me to name something the P cant do, I did, and you said I was referring to not being able to play Jazz on one (How you twisted that around is beyond me?)
and, OMG, Once again: i never said they were one trick ponies......but, yes, the standard single PU models are limited sonically by just having a solitary voice attribute, no matter where you place your plucking hand position or what technique you use. Thats just science/physics - not an opinion
