you've got an excellent bass, no need to get rid of it.

the pickup in it is fine, and should cover just about any style of music with the right amp.

you can upgrade it with things like fancier pickups and active preamps with no ill effect on the bass.

Oh I forgot to say has most know here I use to be a lead guitar player in a Christain Metal band and on the worship team. Then someone talk me in playing bass and I found I like it better then guitar its alot of fun,so I got me a teacher I go to 4 times a month. I dont know alot yet about bass equipment. Iam playing in a small band me a lead guitarist and a drummer. we do about 2or 3 gigs a month. plus I play at church. So like I said I have alot to learn about bass equipment. My favorite bass player depends on the music. Victor Wootens cool Jaco I just seen a kid at the Guitar Center today that was pretty awesome. Hes going to Baylor in Austin.

Gary, if you're looking for a pickup with a bit deeper low end, you may want to consider the Bartolini "8S" or "8CBP" pickups. The "8CBP" in particular should have a nice fundamental with a good midrange.

The Delano "PMVC 4 FE" pickup (mentioned by testing1two) is also very good, but it may be a bit too "ballsy" for what you need. I've tried the 5-string version of this pickup and it had a really great fundamental but also very punchy midrange that had its own attitude. It may not be quite what you want. The other downside of this pickup was the huge polepieces kept making a "snap" sound when my strings came too close and got caught by the magnetic field.

And don't let anyone else give you crap about your writing style. You're learning how to playing bass, so your heart is in the right place.

My bass instructor plays in Austin, and is called alot to play with different people when they make CDs. He has a PHD in music. He plays mostly Jazz,Rock and Blues does not like country much. Anyway he is going to come to my music room and look at my rig and help me EQ it and see where Iam at. He told me to ditch the fender flats and get a better flat wound string, He said get something in the ball park of elixir strings spelled that wrong didnt I. He also uses Bart and Delano pickups in his Fenders his main bass is a Modulus did I spell that wrong Oh well. He said take that stupid S-1 switching out when I change pickups. $100.00 pickups and strings cheaper then another bass and speaker cabs. In my search for sound I have purchase a Carvin amp didnt like it. I then bought my SWR700 head like it, but couldnt decide on speakers to get sound tried 2 x 15 cab with Peavey BW. Hartke 410 and Fane 15 cab nope. tried Aguilar 210 and Fane 15 okay then Aguilar 210 and Peavey Lowrider 18 closer. Now SWR 410 its cool but miss the 18 sometimes it rock. But just think it could all have been done with pickups and strings. might have alot of stuff to put on craigslist. My instructor who is a busy man is going to spend a day with me a week from saturday, we are going tru speakers and eqs. nice of him I will let you all know what he comes up with.

Curtis Novak Charlie Christian P Bass pickup is the secret weapon if you want a warmer but authentic Precision tone. I'm telling you, best $125 I've ever spent.

i agree with this. they're not expensive and they go a long way toward giving you that smooth old-school P-bass R&B sound

you might also considering changing your tone capacitor to a higher value - try this BEFORE replacing the pickup. it costs about ONE DOLLAR and goes a long way toward achieving that kind of smooth tone by itself

oh, and have you considered installing a brass grounding plate while you've got it open?

i just did these mods (with an SPB-1) to a P-bass and it got me the sound i was looking for - seems pretty close to what you're describing

I know call me nuts, I have a USA P Bass which has the S-1 switching I dont care about. Anyway I love the Bass dont care about the pickups. I cant afford another bass right now so I thought about swapping out pickups for something like S.D. Quarter Pounders but which ones I want a deeper little more bottom. Are some other pickups. Some told me I could do this with a pedal, like a Sansamp are something running it tru the effects loop are in front of the amp. I use a SWR 750 WorkingPro Head SWR 410 cab. At one club I Play I run out of my head tru the P.A. tru 18s that what they make me use and on the stage I have a 210 monitor and a 15.
