It's gonna get a tiny bit of color, and a tiny bit of wipe-on poly with the tiniest brush I have :cool:. I think all in all it'll be hidden and the flaws, by my standards at least, are acceptable. It's coming out better than my last attempt at a full gloss finish.

The hard to polish spots probably still need another pass or two with swirl remover but I owe my yard some time, and I have an afternoon gig, so can't do it today.

I've got a gig this evening, and I work for government and get a bunch of PTO, so I took the day off and did some assembly work. It may not seem like much, but holes have to get cleaned out, I double checked the alignment of things as it hasn't been mocked up for many weeks and it's now covered in a glossy layer of plastic. I also had to rewire the MM from the series wiring it came to me with, to 4 conductor cause I'm putting a series/parallel/single-coil mini toggle in it. I got what I wanted accomplished, bridge is installed, pickups installed, and neck installed. With the neck I started with a small shim and I think it dropped me right where I wanna be, a little raising of the saddles should put the action where I want it. I've got other things to do today so I'm wrapping this up for now. Looks a lot more like a bass than it did yesterday :D

Putting some time in tonight. Things went really well in some respects, not so well in others...

I got the mini toggle and pre in and wired.

It went good, fits fine, nothing I haven't done before.

Then I noticed something had gotten on the back so I instinctively went to get it off and my thumbnail did this

This finish is soft. I don't know if it isn't fully cured yet, if I did something wrong, or if it's just the way it is. I also noticed my thumbnail did this when getting the switch finger tight

These things are minor... but annoying :meh:

It doesn't bode well for how the bass will wear over time either...

...so I stopped for now. Need to come back to it with a cool head.

That looks great! If the finish is indeed soft for some reason, leave the newly buffed out surface exposed to air for a week or two, then do a little spot repair work….it should be relatively straightforward to fix.

Yeah, I know I can repair the bad scrape on the back. It's the longevity of the finish which is more concerning. It has been a few weeks since I buffed it. It's been in my basement which is a little cooler than the rest of the house. I run a dehumidifier so it's not a humid environment. Hopefully it hardens more over time.

Just enjoy playing it and take care of the thing and you should be fine! I started using the GF stuff about 10 years ago myself and haven’t run into any durability issues.

Finished the wiring, installed the electrosocket (of course the hole was a tiny bit small and needed careful relief with the dremel so socket and jack fit :D). Installed the strap buttons, stuck a battery in it and all controls work as they should :thumbsup:

All that's left to do is adjust the nut height, string/setup, and make some cavity covers. I hoped I could at least find the battery compartment cover online, if not the control cover too but no dice. If anyone has a source please point me to it. I've got a sheet of BWB so I might just have to make em with paper templates.

It's close, real close. I'm playing a double header today (Elks club BBQ mid afternoon, local bar at night), and a mid-day winery gig tomorrow, so probably gonna be at least a couple days before I can put more time in.

Well, many moons ago @Matt Liebenau pointed out the brass nut I bought was too high, and quite an accurate assessment it was. Today I too 2mm out of the height and strung it.

I also found a cavity cover that was nearly perfect. I lined the opening with black tape to trick your eye into not noticing how slightly imperfect it is:

I was getting hum from the MM so I swapped around the south coil leads and that's fixed.

It still needs setup work, and then another polish, but this disparate pile of parts made its first sounds as a complete bass today!

First impressions on tone are good. The MM is a punch machine on series, much more mellow in parallel. And similarly laid back with north coil only. The sadowsky neck pickup is very classic jazz neck pickup but silent and hotter. It's hard to say much else without addressing the playing issues. Gonna give the neck some time under tension and see what steps are needed. The battery cover is arriving soon and that will be the end of assembly.
