My own little collection consists of and Ibanez SR505, an MIJ P bass and three Jazz basses. A mutt of a '73, a VM fretless and an AM STD 5 string. Love them all for differant reasons.
But I must confess the one I've been playing and digging on the most lately has been my '73 Jazz. It's got a Warmoth neck (original neck warped beyond repair) and Seymour Duncan Antiquity II pickups because the original neck pickup went bad. Also has a BA II bridge. Got DR Nickel Lo Riders on it as well. I like the tighter tension.
Hard to explain but it's the most "Jazz bass" sounding of the three. To me it's like..."now this is what a Jazz bass should sound like!" Just a slight turn of the tone knob and the sound is very alive.

Henceforth, the term "Jazz Bass" shall apply to all Jazz styled basses for the duration of this magnificent thread. That is to say, as long as the pickup configuration and tone are similar enough to a Fender Jazz, it may be referred to as a "Jazz Bass."
So it was said by the reigning authority here - Me. Naturally, I hold the right to deem any given bass a Jazz or an inferior specimen as I see fit.
This is how I mentally translate an alarming number of TB posts. FWIW I still think of myself as a Jazz bass guy, but I keep bringing the P to gigs...
Hmmmm....... the growl alone from one of my Warwicks would scare off any of these basses from ever stepping up to this challenge!!!! Warwicks...... best basses ever!!!!!

I knew where you where going with that...I call them a ll Jazz or J basses as well.
I hear you Kwesi...I know its not a serious thread...However on a serious note I think a good portion of the time (slight more then half) I can use "J" style bass. I love them like the next J guy...They have a great tone that so many have come to love.
However sometimes you just need something a little thicker to come through, I find this especially true in rock situations with loud drummers that use larger/depper drums (no joke, not just a goofy rock reference) but a real frequency thing.
To me thats when I say a "Ray" not necessarily a EBMM Stingray (persay) but Ray of some kind comes in to play for me.
It makes all the difference in the world.

The damage was done by the Jazz, not by the dryer. The Jazz bass also broke the dryer, then the washer, and then drank all the beer in the fridge and screwed the neighbor's wife. Jesus also played one, both the white version and Morgan Freeman.

The funny thing is that I have many 2 pickup basses or 2 pickup plus piezo and I end up using only ONE of these on a given bass. My Conklin and Rob Allens are stuck in piezo mode. My CB Rami 6 is stuck on the bridge pickup in parallel and lo-z.

A better term I think is the "me too" bass.
I never liked Jazz basses. Even though my Ibanez has two of my Neo Jazz pickups on it, it's not a Jazz bass, or derivative, and doesn't sound like one.
Sorry but IMHO they are just too common place these days. Sometimes you have to do your own thing.
My jazz bass has a paulownia body so it's a little fragile, I think a P bass could kick it's ass if they were in physical combat. But it's the battle of wits that matters here, and my jazz is the wittiest jazz ever to jazz a jazz.

But you have and love an SB4000 and its a jazz type
My SB4000 is the EVOLUTION to a superior bass which has as much DNA similarity to a Jazz Bass as does a Human with a star fish.
All of my basses are better than any of yous guys basses and that's the truth.
Kwesi, best parody thread ever.
I've played a few and found Jazz Basses to be good enough for most situations. They are not my preferred bass, but I understand why people like them.
