I Honestly Cant Stand Playing A Rick

When you state something is overated and overpriced what you doing is making a passive aggressive statement that people who buy and play them are ignorant to the fact that they cost to much and don't sound as good as their owners think they do.
Statements like that are insulting and you're going to get a reaction. Say "I don't like the Rics because they are hard to play and don't sound that great. That's an opinion."

Personally I'd qualify that slightly. I agree that the initial post came across as rude. But I would alter the line in quotes to read " I tried a Ric today and I personally didn't like how it played or sounded. It didn't work for me." Just because an instrument doesn't work for you doesn't make it bad. I don't get on with Fenders. Are they bad basses? History (and some guys named Jamerson and Pastorius) would tend to argue not! I once played a genuine 62 stack knob Jazz; wouldn't have given you $50 for it. It wasn't a bad bass, I just didn't get on with it. Others may have fallen over themselves over it. And it pays to remember that all individual instruments vary. I have 4 Rics and they're all different; they play, sound and feel different. Making an assumption based on 1 instrument is a big mistake. Play several; if you still don't like them, fair enough. They may just not be for you. I hate these "I played such-and-such a bass and it was crap" threads, they show incredible immaturity.
As for Rics being overpriced, there's a lot of work goes into building a Ric, masses more than Fenders, and yet there are many Fenders of comparable (or even greater) price.
i don't know ric had such issues with quality control.
Well, one's a 72 4001 (pre skunk-stripe), one's a 73 4001 (skunk stripe), ones a 73 4000 set-neck and one's a 91 4001CS, so I'll let them off....
They've never moved me, but I do like seeing them out once in a while. So I;m glad there's guys that dig 'em.
I played several before I bought my first one. I found a beautiful one in a finish that now I can't find any reference to(maybe I'm just remembering it wrong), played awesome, and told the store to hold it. Came back the next day and it was gone. Took me a while longer to find one I liked as well.
I've Played my Ric on and off since '78, I'll never sell it, and It feels right and gives me the sound I like, to be blunt, it Rocks.
In my time I've seen many people caqll Rics over priced, but usually he ones who bag them just can't afford them and are peeved about that.
People wko genuinely have a problem with some aspect of a Ric, just move on and find a Bass the like, no whining, or demeaning the users who do like them, just move on.
BTW, I'm not hurt that the OP can't enjoy a Ric, I've also read similar things about My only other Bass , an EB3 which I also love and will not sell.

I don't think they are that uncomfortable but they're not the best playing or sounding basses either, imo.

#1 Valenti's dont suck atall and Nino would kick my arse, but mostly, I cant even get into the frame of mind that requires me to stand on a soapbox about gear which is clearly a personal preference.
So with due resepct to Mr., Deacon, I dont get the point. Rics are neat, but not for everyone. Thats a given, a truism. I'm using quite a bit of slap technique in my rock these days, and a Ric or my old Tbird jsut aren't ergonomic for that. But does that matter to Mr. Deacon? When I want to grab a pick and do straight rock, a Ric can't hardly be beat. Does that matter?

Now now, it's all very well having differences of opinion but when the thread spirals down into personal insults then your own credibility is up for criticism.
I don't think he's insulting the OP, I think he's saying that at least the OP tried one, instead of saying they suck because someone else said they suck.

I played a 4001 in 79-81. I really liked it. Back then they didn't have the tone they apparently have now, but if they would have had better tone I would probably still be playing one. As for the pickup guard, that's the first thing I got rid of.
hehe. i love the neck and i can use the pickguard as a thumbrest. and i really like the pickupcover. it is perfect for pick-playing-style.
the only thing i don't like are the small mute screws at the bridge (and the not very userfriendly bridge itselfe)

At 17 I was prepared to plunk down the earnings from my summer job for a Ric but there was one small problem. I DID NOT LIKE PLAYING THEM. I ended up buying a Fender P-Bass instead.
To each their own, right? There are many bassists who love playing Rics. I tried but could not be one of them

Al, no no way, dont misunderstand, my point was that at least Mr. Deacon tried one for himself versus the "opinion of someone's opinion" that seems to trade for thought in our info age society.
like johnvice, I havent spent time wth one since I was a youngin', oh, '76 or so I was looking at one. Bought a used 73 jazz bass instead, and thought it sucked (
) when I tried a Peavey T40 in 79.
So whatyya I know?
But I went back to a jazz bass for my "voice" eventually.
Like I said, glad to see players who still use them, I like to see them out.
