I generally don't like the way Fenders feel, play or sound.....so what. I just don't play 'em.....what's your point? Rics are overrated and overpriced to you yet you state it like it is an absolute. Great bashing thread.

I just gave my opinion. And I even said it was just my OPINION. Im not saying anything is absolute. Like I said before, for the people that like them, thats cool. But I just wanted to share my first experience with playing one. Thats all. Didnt feel like getting bitched at.
I respect the differing opinions. That's why we have plenty of wonderful basses to choose from.
The first post in the thread came off as bashing (IMO). To emphatically state they are overrated is a symbolic slap in the face to Ric players and lovers of the brand. It's like saying we aren't enlightened enough to know what a good playing and sounding bass is. My feelings aren't hurt and I'm not personally offended......I just think it is a mildly rude way of expressing an opinion.

Yeah, it was JUST AN OPINION. God, no need to get so touchy over it, when it wasnt bashing. It was just my opinion that they are overrated.
I could *never* use a Rickenbacker as my only bass...essentially for all the reasons that the OP intimated. (Especially the feeling that it's feel coerces how & what you play.)
But...
I would love to have a 4001 specifically for those times where that stuff it makes you play is the right thing to play!

My feelings as a Rick lover are hurt
To those complaining about the pickup cover, I tried one too, it is my FAVORITE bass. Everything felt good except that stupid pickup cover. If I ever bought one I'd take it off, does it really have any use besides being annoying?
There's no question that Ricks are a "love 'em or hate 'em" kind of bass. I owned one for several years, and I really loved the tone it produced. But I couldn't get comfortable playing it, for some of the reasons you mentioned, and I wanted more variety out of my bass. So I guess I'm a little of both. The Rick bass does one thing absolutely perfect, and everything else is kind of a compromise. If you're into that one thing, it's the best bass in the world.
Fair enough. As long as your venting, what else in this world prevents you from standing?

Rickenbackers has many obsolete features like a pickup cover, a mechanical mute, and Ric-o-sound. The bridge is a pain in the rear to adjust. 60s 4001 basses had weak necks and weak pickups, 70s 4001 basses are stressed beyond their design specs by simply stringing them with roundwound strings, and if you improperly adjust the truss rods you can pop off the fretboard.
But they fixed the structural flaws with the introduction of the 4003. In spite of their quirks I really like the 4003 and 4004 Ric basses. They have wonderful flat straight necks and they have a unique sound. With the neck thru design, maple body, bubinga fretboard Rics are a different kind of bass.

You know---I thought Fenders were overrated years ago---even after I owned one. But since then, I haven't remained so narrowly focused on one particular sound, or brand (I was obsessed with Gibsons and the fuzzy Jack Bruce sound, which Fenders just don't do), and instead have come to appreciate tonal quality as a part of the whole, not as a whole unto itself. I owned a Fender very recently for two years and found it to be a great bass, as I feel my Ric is, my Gibsons, my Kubicki, and several others I have tried out. I love the sound of each one of them---and each one seems to fit better on particular songs than another---and each has the tonal capability to fit well with all songs.
Of course, there are some basses that just plain suck...
No need to overreact to a one-minute trial of a bass, either.
What would this board be like if every single TBer started a thread for every bass they tried for a minute and didn't like, and said they were overpriced and overrated? Useless.
i can play any bass. if you can't, and that makes you hate a bass, i have to say, you're probably not much of a player.
a ric is a great bass, if you can't play it, seriously, you're doing something wrong.
also, if you never challenge yourself, i sure hope you're happy sounding the way you do from here on out.
