I hope Esperanza is not doing a Meshell!

Thinking on it a bit more, part of my own perspective on this track comes from me being many other things before ever picking up a bass and realizing I loved making sound on it. I'm a synth geek and have produced for singers and rappers and have chopped samples in classic hip-hop fashion and like to record banging on filing cabinets and the like. Also, I'm an enthusiast for the avant-garde in general, and performed John Cage's piece consisting of opening one's mail onstage in my senior composition recital in college. I'm that brand of weirdo, heh.

So, perspectives can vary WILDLY. Speaking of which, I bet a lot of the wide-eyed young electro-pop-raised youth (quite a bit of newer music in that style is well informed by serious theory, I've discovered, so good for 'em) will be all over this as it will be similar to but different from sounds they're familiar with.

Also, times are changin', and IMHO, artists owe it to themselves to remain open to new ideas for the sake of the art. With that said, I'm betting Esperanza's live shows including cuts like this will also have straight-ahead jazz type charts on the upright in them too, giving further education to the audiences who haven't been exposed to as much of that sound.

When I hear Esperanza her gender doesn't even come into play. If it did it would probably make me wish I had ovaries. The same goes with those you listed. I don't consider them "female" bassists because I don't consider others "male" bassists. I consider them bassists, period.

A) Meshell is great and one of the godmothers of neo-soul, employing the fattest of bass licks along with sultry contralto vocals, I highly recommend

B) Adron! She was at the Inman Park Music Festival last year and I was blown away by both her performance and that of her bassist, who was so insanely good he stole the show at times (in a good way). Wish I got the guy's name, he was a beast

Thanks, I will check her out. I haven't met Adron but heard of her through a mutual friend over 10 years ago, and who gave me a (legit) copy of her CD, perhaps first album, which I have listened to ever since.
I can't believe how little traffic / views her songs have, it is an affront to my internal sense of meritocracy that leads down a rabbit-hole of musician laments we are all familiar with.

And this is what amazes me about Esperanza . She is laying down the groove in the back ground and when asked to keep it going she starts flowing with some great jazz vocal improvising , brings down the house and pretty mischievous drops the mic and redtrurns to continue in the groove zone .

Jealous that you got to see her that many times, but too bad you skipped Emily D - the show I saw on that tour was great - I've seen 100s of shows in lots of genres, and this one made my top 10. Of course it's really different than her other albums, and she "only" played her fretless 5 (again, while singing - all sorts of weird tricky syncopation if you line up the bass and vocal parts) but well worth it. The stagecraft/props stuff...meh, could care less about that. But the music and playing was top-notch.

I guess you feel that the English language is incapable of evolution and we can only use words out of the Oxford dictionary. I am not the person in charge of how "hate" and "hater" qualifications are met and I'm clearly not the only person who feels the threshold has been hit.

I don’t see where being totally cool with somebody disagreeing with me (like I am with you) would automatically mean my position on this side topic would have to change. I can respect the fact you have a different position even if I don’t agree with the argument being made.

I’m also not hung up on the definition. I’m concerned about “word devaluation.” Which is a real problem for me and would require a total derail of this thread to get into besides requiring an awful lot of text entry to discuss. And I really wouldn’t want to broach the topic of NLP here. There’s enough books on the subject for anyone who’s interested.

So lets just agree to disagree on this and no harm done.
