The fact that anyone from either side of the argument chooses this particular song/video as a hill to die on is fascinating. So many things to get uptight about, yet bass players are here arguing about another bass player as if it was an MMA fight or some other armchair friendly sport. Super lame.
Agree with Petrus61, I think in the age that we live in, we give too much importance into what the common man thinks about well, everything, even if he has no opinion on the matter, but must be heard. Most opinions out there are spawned and belong in the toilet.
Nope. You’re not missing anything. If it works for you, then it works for you and it’s all good. Not everybody likes the same thing.
Variety is a wonderful thing. If one sundae flavor doesn’t do it for you then there’s 100 other toppings to chose from. Same goes for music. No shame in that.
When I hear Esperanza her gender doesn't even come into play. If it did it would probably make me wish I had ovaries. The same goes with those you listed. I don't consider them "female" bassists because I don't consider others "male" bassists. I consider them bassists, period.
Exactly. That might've made some listeners happy but I liken it to a parent who never wants their child to grow up and expand. Not quite as bad as the fans who want a note-for-note rendition every time they hear a band live but definitely on that road.

They qualify under a category? By who? Is there a duly appointed panel or maybe a “haters gonna hate” (that phrase is such an odd way of saying nothing btw) tribunal somewhere? News to me. I mustn’t have been copied on that memo.

If that puts me out of touch with: dog whistling, sloppy thinking, poor english usage, fanbois, groupthink, bandwagoning, this year’s “hip” colloquialisms, deadcatting, gen-angst, and low commonality, then there’s no need for you to feel sorry for me. Because if embracing the above means being “out of touch,” I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Big world. A lot of different viewpoints. I’m good with that even if someone choses not to agree with mine.

In the current vernacular those definitions of "hate" are not correct. And that's been around for several years now.
I agree because I cannot think of a single time in my life when I heard a bassist and thought that’s a woman or that’s a man. I either thought the playing was good or bad.
Yeah. I pretty much felt the same way. About the best I could say about it was “it’s early yet” and try not to rush to judgement. But something inside me makes me think of an old musical friend of mine. He was a bluesman through and through. One of those rare ones that could lay down a perfectly executed smoky bass line that really made you sit up and take notice. But he wanted to be a rocker. And more specifically a prog rocker. God knows why.
Unfortunately, as hard as he tried, he kept coming across as a blues bassist. And that loose feel and timing play that’s so much a part of blues, and which he teased out of every note he played, just didn’t mesh with the precision timing and melodic interplays of prog.
Shame really. He kept turning down blues offers and getting frustrated trying to find a prog band he could fit in with.
So it goes.

I guess haters who hate haters who hate haters who hate them covers just about everything - to say nothing of bringing it back full circle. (Much like the circular logic found in the quip: “Haters gonna hate.”)
Like Gallagher so wisely observed:
“Two wrongs don’t make a right - but three lefts do.”
Ain’t no one pissed, dude, that’s what we’re trying to tell you. Another colloquialism you may have encountered that, again, is effectively synonymous with “haters gonna hate” is “I ain’t even mad.”
You’re letting the dictionary definition blind you to what people are actually trying to communicate.
You call a guy a “bad mothershager on the bass guitar” we all know you’re not actually suggesting he’s got an Oedipal complex.
A) Meshell is great and one of the godmothers of neo-soul, employing the fattest of bass licks along with sultry contralto vocals, I highly recommend
B) Adron! She was at the Inman Park Music Festival last year and I was blown away by both her performance and that of her bassist, who was so insanely good he stole the show at times (in a good way). Wish I got the guy's name, he was a beast
