i just couldn't resist - i ordered a carvin BX250

i don't quite know how it happened. i wasn't planning on getting a new head at this time, but carvin's micro head, the BX250, was on sale for $169 and i'm currently using a 40 watt combo. when i first read about the price here on talkbass, i didn't really think about it, but as the day went on, i thought "wow, that's the price of a used MB200", and i found myself going back to the ebay page, then the carvin product page. when my husband came home, i was teetering on the edge, and he pushed me right over, so it's ordered and due to arrive on dec 1.

something that made me grin is that this little head weighs 1/10th what my last carvin head weighed. of course, that was a 1000 watt head with a tube preamp, but i still love the idea that is SO much smaller, and am looking forward to a head i can put in my music stuff bag with the cables and mic and will barely notice the difference in weight.

of course, this is going to lead to cab shopping in the not-too-distant future as i sold all mine a while back...

I think you'll love this little Carvin loudification device. You'll give yourself an embarrassed chuckle that you stuck with your 40W as long as you did; you'll discover that phenom called "headroom" with this new little Carvin 250. Having both a Carvin 500 and a BX1500, I haven't found anything I dislike about them.
Find a nice 2x10 or 2x12 and you'll be as they say (sorry!) boobies on a Ritz.

no embarrassed chuckle from me - i'm coming back from an injury, so only needed something for the livingroom, but now i'm ready for something more.

have to go pretty portable as i have physical limitations. unfortunately i'm also on a budget. i'm going to want to head off to some GCs and sam ash stores to try out the goods.

i'm considering a 2x10 (or 2x12 if i find one used or on sale) to start which - if needed - can be stacked on another. i'd like to use it vertically, and i'm considering a hartke hydrive cab to start or a TC k cabs. part of me is interested in an ampeg PF - bigger nice, you know? GK - i'm not sure. they have some nice stuff, and while i don't have room for one, the GK neo 4x10 blew me right out of the water. the thing is, i'm not sure if their tweeters are defeatable, but i'll spend some time reading up today.

I don't know how long you can wait to save up rubles, but if selling other gear (or a kidney) is an option, the absolute lightest, smallest true " David " cab IMHE is the Barefaced One 10. It's like a lunch box at 15 lbs and is as loud and low as a good quality 12, really. Mine is as loud a "normal" 210, and only gives up a bit to my Berg CN210. Otherwise, I'd look for a used GK Neo 112-ll. They are 30 lbs, a bit bulky but with good side, bar handles and sound great. My .02 would be a single 12 and eventually a pair of 12s for best weight/portability/modularity. EA Wizzy 12s are also about 35 lbs and small form factor with recessed side handles and they sound superb. Good luck .

well, whatever i get now won't be forever, but will still be a nice step up from what i'm using.

regarding the Neo 112 - do the side handles recess enough that it can be used standing on a side so it's vertical and do you happen to know if the tweeter can be turned all the way off?

Well, thanks to pcake and this thread I have a late birthday gift to myself on order. I have been pretty well GAS free for a couple of months, content to wait until I could afford a nice head/cab setup, but now I just have to afford a cab. That will come with time and patience though.

The biggest problem? Now I have to buy a cab for the US and one for Latvia. I sure as heck am not taking a cab on the plane with me when I travel between countries...a 3.5 lb. amp should be no problem though.

Thanks for the info/inspiration. I hope you love yours.
