I was just wondering why so many people spend so much money on a Fender Jazz made by someone else and look for that vintaged sound or feel they have a better Fender than Fender. Before you chime in yes I have tried some of the boutique basses ( no names ) and in some cases other than the ergonomics of the neck I just don’t get it. On the vintage sound, amps and cabinets today are not tuned like the old acoustics, ampegs, peavys, fenders of old. Imho no SS head will never sound and feel like a SVT or old Fender Bassman ( all tube amps)

I paid Fender prices for a non-Fender J, because I wanted specs that Fender didn't offer. Soundwise, I was just looking for the J-style ballpark, no specific Fender sound.

There’s good news for you on this subject. You don’t have to understand it. And I’m not looking for the “vintage tone” from a Jazz-style bass. There’s enough folks out there doing that. And “vintage tone” could have as many definitions as all the folks out there chasing it.

I pretty much agree. Fender loyalist here. No matter how good, I just don't like the headstock shape on anything else, except EBMM.

Not for mine, and I had a Metro 5 in the past, still have my Fenders. YMMV...

Choices are good. You can spend as much or as little as you want on whatever you want. I don't HAVE to get what you choose. What a great time to be a bass player! So many choices!
Hey now a really good cherry pie with a scoop of ice cream and a cup of coffee is worth the price of admission.
I have never been one to have something just because its popular. Brand specific is shortsighted. You are missing the boat. I don't need to sound like everybody else and I'm by no means a trend follower. People don't care what you play, that's on you. Whatever blows your dress up.
