I just want to ask you a quick question

My take is that people who "ask quick questions" are hyper, multitasking, overextended types who think they can make time stand still by saying something is going to be quick when they know it's really not. They never really come to realize that their "quick questions" take just as long as everybody else's questions, and that the answers will take the normal amount of time too. They are often heard saying "I'll just do one more thing real quick" and are frequently lacking in punctuality.

Has someone ever rushed up to you and said “I just want to ask you a quick question?” Have you ever wondered why does it have to be a “quick question” why can’t they just tell the truth and say “hey I need a good chunk of your time to ask you a lot of complicated drawn-out questions?” Do they think I will say “no I can’t answer any questions today” so they are hoping if it is a “quick question” that I’ll cooperate. Then twenty minutes later they are asking me the fifth long drawn out question, and I wonder what ever happened to the quick question? I have tried saying “no” when people ask me this they usually just pause and sometimes they laugh but they go ahead and ask the question anyway. Or, some people call by bluff and say “okay” and start walking away. Then, defeated I have to call them back and ask for the question. If they are a smart alec like me they will make me beg for the question.
What’s the deal, why do we say things like this anyway? I drive myself crazy by taking things we say literally and if you don’t believe me I’m going to punch you right in the nose. “In the nose?” What we have little tiny hands that fit up people’s nostrils?
So, to make a long story short … too late! Okay, I’m going to stop right here.

Usually I reply with a very short answer: "No you may not!"

Old story, I believe about an archbishop of Canterbury. He was invited to give a talk and asked how much time he would need to prepare.

He said, "It depends on how long you want me to talk for."

"If I'm to talk for fifteen minutes, I'll need a month to prepare."

"If I'm to talk for an hour, I'll need a week to prepare."

"If I can talk for as long as I like, I'll start right now."

Did nobody else see this? The collective power of TBOT is legen, wait for it.... dairy.
Here we were able to attract the attention of a beautiful actress/artist simply by looking up a photo for "tongue in cheek". Quite amazing. Perhaps my day is now made.

Wow. TBOT delivers again. :)

Anyhoozle... "can I ask you a quick question?" never really bothers me.
It's the "can I aks/ax you a question" variety that grates on my nerves... it's like someone taking a set of dentures and scraping them across a chalkboard. (yes dentures, fingernails are just not hard enough to impart the same agony as mispronouncing that word..)

Now, back to my coffee.
